For our Aecht Schlenkerla Erle black lager we use a very special smoked malt. This is not dried over beech wood fire, as is usually the case, but over fire made of alder wood. The alder smoked malt brings a fine, complex smoky flavor to the beer – less strong and spicy than in our classic smoked beer. A high roasted malt content provides a pronounced roasted aroma and the dark, almost black color. At 4.2% abv, Aecht Schlenkerla Erle has slightly less alcohol, but is strong in flavor.

Bottle. Pours a very dark brown with beige to tanned head. Notes of smoked wood, bacon, blackcurrant, nuts, brown bread, milk chocolate. Medium body, slick. I'm not a big fan of this style but this is the best I've tried by far. There are some lighter fruit and chocolate notes which offset some of the smoke and meaty rich elements. Much better balanced. I actually enjoyed it!

I have had this from a bottle and from a can. This is one of the world's best breweries and I love rauchbier but I did not enjoy the adler smoke as much as the other beers. Still, flavors of smoked meat and campfire, as well as heavily roasted malt. Still a great beer but this brewery has set a high bar.

Bottle. Thx to Bryne for the trade. Its a dark one, close to black, but with a reddish brown hue. Some lacing from the dark beige head. The aroma has a delicious smoke touch, ham, bonfire, along with dark dried fruit, some roasted malts and a light piney hoppyness. It's medium bodied, close to full bodied, with a good bitterness and a gentle bitterness. Semi-dry. Roasted malts, some licorice and dark chocolate, a hoppy fruityness and most of all smoke in the flavor. Smoked ham, cured sausage, some bonfire. Lasting finish. A very well brewed beer, suited for so many occasions. Cured and/or smoked meat and cheese, by the bonfire or while barbequeing at least. 241218
Drewno olchowe to jednak nie ten klimat co agresywna wędzona bukowa, wyraźna mineralna nuta trochę mi nie pasuje. Nie ujęło.
