For our Aecht Schlenkerla Erle black lager we use a very special smoked malt. This is not dried over beech wood fire, as is usually the case, but over fire made of alder wood. The alder smoked malt brings a fine, complex smoky flavor to the beer – less strong and spicy than in our classic smoked beer. A high roasted malt content provides a pronounced roasted aroma and the dark, almost black color. At 4.2% abv, Aecht Schlenkerla Erle has slightly less alcohol, but is strong in flavor.

I believe I picked this up at CBB.

This smoked schwarzbier has a milder smokey aroma than many of their other beers. Medium to light bodied with good chocolate maltiness and light smokiness.
This is good. Not as stellar as some but definitely a solid beer.

Bottle from Manchester Wine & Liquors. Virtually opaque dark brown with thin head, fair retention and light lacing. Aroma is strong smoked, sweet wood. Taste is strong, smoked, sweet wood (like a sweet hot dog/honey glazed ham), roasted malt. Smooth, frothy texture, average carbonation and finish as taste. The alder wood carries the show. Hard to know this is a Schwarzbier--don't buy this because you think it's a traditional Schwarzbier! You've got to want a mellower, somewhat savory Rauchbier.

(Bottle, In De Wildeman, Amsterdam, 22 Feb 2025) Dark brown colour, almost black, with creamy beige head. Malty, smoky nose with notes of chocolate, coffee and dark bread. Malty, roasted taste with chocolate, coffee, black rye bread, mild smoke flavours and a mild herbal bitterness in the finish. Medium body, dry. Tasty, harmonious and well balanced, with a mild smoke touch. Very nice.
Bottle from supermarket, drank in apartment in Bamberg. Very nice smoked beer.

0.5l bottle many thanks to Lore. Black body with an immediately disappearing head. Roasted malts and smoke dominates the aroma but it shows notes of bready malts and floral hops too. Taste of smoke, ash, roasted malts, bread, sugar syrup and floral hops. Medium bodied and has a long bitter finish that comes from both the hops and the roasted malts. Very nice beer.

Tap at Schlenkerla. #7. Dark. Ash, smoke, chocolate. Soft, creamy, full, chewy. Malty, roasted. This I like.
