Schwarzbier (black lager) has been around since at least the 16th century and used to be more widespread than it is today. In the industrial revolution of the 19th century, it was almost displaced by mass-produced lighter beers. Only a few breweries preserved the beer style, and for about 30 years now it has been experiencing a renaissance.

For our Aecht Schlenkerla Erle black lager we use a very special smoked malt. This is not dried over beech wood fire, as is usually the case, but over fire made of alder wood. The alder smoked malt brings a fine, complex smoky flavor to the beer – less strong and spicy than in our classic smoked beer. A high roasted malt content provides a pronounced roasted aroma and the dark, almost black color. At 4.2% abv, Aecht Schlenkerla Erle has slightly less alcohol, but is strong in flavor.

Review based on the BJCP2021 guidelines (style 32A - Base: 8B). Bottle 50 cl - Batch LWJ (BB: 08/2024). AROMA: medium-high smoky aroma with low to faint dark caramel and roasted malt. APPEARANCE: very dark amber color and clear with ruby highlights. low light brown head with low retention. TASTE: medium smoke flavor with a woody character followed by a low roasted malt background. medium-low bitterness with a slightly smoky finish. MOUTHFEEL: meidum-low body with medium-low carbonation. OVERALL: an interesting smoked schwarzbier more balanced in the flavor than aroma.

Can shared by Jeff, thanks! Pours a clear deep brown with an amber hue and a gray head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has a nice campfire smoke with a bit of bacon and some light bread backing. Flavor has earthy and bacony smoke with a bit of bread and grain backing.

Fermentoren: pours dark brown with beige head. Aroma is smokey. Lacks the depth of other beers from brewery. Still very nice.

Shared 500 ml bottle at Mandag i Annen, Cardinal. Dark reddish brown colour, off-white head. Pleasant aroma of lightly roasted malts, black bread and alder smoke. Smooth flavour, moderate alder smoke and black bread again, a slight fruitiness, moderate hops. Lots of flavour for a 4.2% beer. A full bottle for me next time, please!
