Schwarzbier (black lager) has been around since at least the 16th century and used to be more widespread than it is today. In the industrial revolution of the 19th century, it was almost displaced by mass-produced lighter beers. Only a few breweries preserved the beer style, and for about 30 years now it has been experiencing a renaissance.

For our Aecht Schlenkerla Erle black lager we use a very special smoked malt. This is not dried over beech wood fire, as is usually the case, but over fire made of alder wood. The alder smoked malt brings a fine, complex smoky flavor to the beer – less strong and spicy than in our classic smoked beer. A high roasted malt content provides a pronounced roasted aroma and the dark, almost black color. At 4.2% abv, Aecht Schlenkerla Erle has slightly less alcohol, but is strong in flavor.

Bottle. Dark reddish brown with a fat coat of beige head. 3+ Aroma of singed caramel and smoke. Moderately roasty with some bread, caught caramel. Perhaps a bit drier than I'd guessed with almost fruity smoke yet so clean behind. Delicate bitterness at the end. Elegant and refreshing.

500ml bottle from St Albans beer shop, St Albans, Herts. A very dark brown/black coloured pour with a medium off white/beige head on top which doesn't linger too long. Smokey, malty, caramel, meaty aroma and taste. Very drinkable rauchbier as expected but a bit on the thin side.

Appearance: Opaque peat black with a decent beige head. Aroma: Lovely smoked dark malt. burnt bread, hop, fruity hints. Taste: Rather dry. Intense. Smoke, ash, caramel & toast, bread, fruity hints, spicy noble hop. Light to medium ending bitterness. Mouth feel: Medium minus body, soft to average carbonation. Summary: Another bomb from the brewery.

500mL bottle, pours black with a small beige head. Aroma has a nice ashy smoke character, toasted caramel and bready malt. Flavour reveals a great ashy smoke character as usual, smoked wood, dry bready malt, and a touch of toasted caramel. As usual, good depth to the smoke and malty; low residual sweetness. Soft bready malt mouthfeel and finish. Great stuff.

500ml bottle. Another completely excellent addition to the Schlenkerla family. Pretty much my favorite Schwarzbier. Just nails it with the roasted malts. Smoke tone is perhaps drier, but still woody and pleasant. Couples excellently with the dark malts. World Class stuff all the way.

Bottle from Bine & Vine. Pours clear dark brown with a slight tan head. Aroma is quite smoky. And malty. Med body or so. Flavor is smoky, malty and a bit med dark fruit. Even a touch of earthiness. Drier than not. More smoky than bitter. Very nice flavor.
