Schwarzbier (black lager) has been around since at least the 16th century and used to be more widespread than it is today. In the industrial revolution of the 19th century, it was almost displaced by mass-produced lighter beers. Only a few breweries preserved the beer style, and for about 30 years now it has been experiencing a renaissance.
For our Aecht Schlenkerla Erle black lager we use a very special smoked malt. This is not dried over beech wood fire, as is usually the case, but over fire made of alder wood. The alder smoked malt brings a fine, complex smoky flavor to the beer – less strong and spicy than in our classic smoked beer. A high roasted malt content provides a pronounced roasted aroma and the dark, almost black color. At 4.2% abv, Aecht Schlenkerla Erle has slightly less alcohol, but is strong in flavor.

500ml can at Pour Company. Dark brown pour, wispy off white head. Sweet, smoky aroma, chocolate. Taste is sweet before smoky, roasty, dark chocolate. Minor ashy notes, campfire on the back end.

500ml bottle bought at the Offie, Leicester, and drunk at home. Dark brown, slightly translucent with a thin uneven off-white head. Big smoky aroma, light notes of liquorice, blackened plums. Taste is nicely sweet with loads more woodsmoke here, hard to detect anything else much but I am not complaining. Some bitterness in the finish. Light to medium body, could do with more carbonation. All in all incredible stuff as usual from this brewery.

Schönes Flaschendesign, optisch Dunkelbraun, feiner Cappuccino-Schaum, in der Nase feinster Schwarzwälder Schinken. Im Trunk wundervolles Raucharoma, würzig, holzig, schöner langer Abgang, perfekt.

Bottle at home in Hackney - picked up from HOTM. Pours clear ruby-brown with a tight, creamy beige head. Medium sweet flavour with notes of jammy candied ham, smoke, campfire, raisins, brown bread. Light bodied with fine, massaging carbonation. Finishes with more smoked ham, toasted malts, a little brown sugar, nips of dried berries, bready mats, mild bitterness, earth. Wildly drinkable stuff.

Bottle (from Die Bierothek). Black colour, mediumsized beigeish brown head. Aroma is smoked wood, mild sweet malts with some herbal and a bit meaty tones. Flavour is smoked wood, some tar, mild toasted malts with some herbs and a bit grassy tones. Nice tar and smoke in the finish. WOW! A bit thin as for the palate, but still jampacked with flavour and aroma. WOW! Woohaa!

Small dark cream head, stable, over - indeed - black beer. Typical Rauch/Schlenkerla nose, but lighter, thinner (not: lean). Faint mineral-fishy. Artisanal birch-to-tarr manifacturing. Woody, again clear, if restrained smoke. The Schwarzbier vector comes with a light, but obvious ashy-woody extra flavour. Seems less phenolic than other Schlenkerla beers. Medium bodied, but a light finish. Feels not that carbonated if well away from undercarbonated. Not bad; might be called Schlenkerla Lite in a non-pejorative way.

Pint can pours with a deep dark mahogany colored body that supports a full tan head of foam that leaves behind a bit of lacing. The aroma offers up an inviting cloud of smoked ham goodness flowing into thin layers of dark fruity esters, roasted malts and a dash of caramel malts. The taste delivers full firm smokiness that runs the gamut of flavor fun. Behind the smokiness are roasted to highly roasted malts filled in at the edges by a mild sense of sweet dark fruity esters. Another sip reveals a very thin caramel maltiness hidden amidst the dark roasted malts. Love this.

Bottle 50 cl. Almost black color with garnet, good ashy foam with lace. Aroma: very pleasant, burnt malt with caramel, smoked cheese and some meat smoked on alder, a little black bread, light sweetness. Taste: burnt and smoke malt, slightly sour and bitter, alder leaves and wood, cheese smoked on alder, very good brew.
