Small head, that disappears almost immediately. Yeasty aroma with pear, syrup and coffee. Good lacing. Very sweet, sugary and syrupy with some licorice. Alcohol present, but hidden because of the sweetness. Raw and heavy, but not impressive.

Caulier version, the ’massive ale’ in this series. Dark brown, hazy beer with stable off-white foam. Caramelly malts, candied fruits, chocolatey, nutty, yeasy with a rounded, soft, almost fluffy mouthfeel, bit warming alcohol, herbal hops and toasted malts in the finish. Very nice, the best of the (discontinued) Rochefortoises, in my opinion.

Cremig-malziger Geruch, deutlich alkoholisch. (Bottle 33 cl) Caulier version. Pours a dark and fairly clear reddish brown with a handsome, beige head leaving a gorgeous lacework as it dissipates. Extremely complex aroma of dried fruit, brown sugar and oak. Surprisingly (no mention of the 10% on the bottle) only a medium body dominated by roasted malt and dried fruit and then an extreme sweetness from the added sugar. Appears almost like a sweet vintage port. No bitterness at all. Some will be put off by the extreme sweetness finding this unbalanced. And they may very well be right. But I find this to be one helluva pleasant sipping beer. 010806

Bottled. Dark brown, with a dense beige head. Demerara, prunes, caramel, toffee and a slightly roasted note in the aroma. Quite sweet flavor, with dried fruits. Full, sweet, fizzy mouthfeel. Sweet finish with some alcohol. A fine brew that could use some food or snack. (060616)

Bottled (BB 12/2005)
Dark ruby with huge tanned head, lots of lace. Roasted aroma of black coffee and burned sugar. Very port-wineous mouthfeel. Caramel, candy-like flavor with some roasty notes. Sweet, maybe even too sweet. A bit like Scotch Silly. Allcohol warms in the aftertaste. For dessert, and to drink slowly.
