My 500th beer for RateBeer. I wanted something special, but it was just a nice beer, but not a classic. Aroma and flavor of smoked malt and berry fruit. Coffee present. Thin, with a long smokey hopbitter finish.

Bottle from Beers of Europe. Appearance - deep brown to black with a light orange tinge around the edge. Nose - bramble and farmyard. Taste - bit yeasty and farmyard again. Blackberry again on the finish. Palate - tangy with an edge of sour. Bitter at the same time. Would like more malt and alcohol sweetness to balance it. Overall - not sure this has worked it.

Handpull cask at the King's Head in Leicester with Rune and Finn. Indigo brown with a dissipating head. Roast coffee, earth in the aroma. Not getting a lot of bramble. Strong overbrewed ciffee in the bittersweet taste with a light sour note. Nice.

(Bottle) Pours black with ruby hints with big pale grey brown head. Interesting aroma - yeast with blackberry and smokey hints. Medium body with generous carbonation. Taste develops significantly. Starts tangy and fruity with some flinty notes. The fruitiness drops away and some smokey burnt and bitter notes develop for a long finish. Unusual, interesting but a bit intense.

Cask at the Wellington, Birmingham. Poured a clear reddish dark brown with a bubbly off white head. The aroma is light roast, some blackberry. The flavour is moderate liqourice bitter with a light watery, slightly dry tart fruit palate. Medium to light bodied with soft carbonation.

(Bottle from Trickling Tap in Grantham) Opaque black stout with a reddish tinge and a thick bubbly, off-white head. Aroma is light and fruity, presumably the blackberry. Flavour has that blackberry flavour as an edge, off-setting the main flavour which is chocolatey malt. Quite a rich beer too which is nice as sometimes the fruity ones can end up feeling a bit ’thin.’ The fruit is perfectly balanced too.

Bottle on the train during the Isle of Wight Jolly. Pours rich brown with a creamy khaki head. The aroma has light diaper, tangy dark malts, grapes. Light sweet flavor with mild brett infection, slight roasted malts, dried and leathery fruits. Light bodied with average carbonation and creamy texture. Nice, lightly bretty finish with soft earthy bitterness, cocoa, leather and burnt grass. Good one, albeit perhaps not altogether as intended.
