Plantarum is a crushable tart wheat beer with hibiscus, lime, and dry hopped with Citra. It’s also a collab with our good friends at @cultivateypsi! This beer was largely Kuma’s seriously brilliant idea, so if you run into him say thanks!

Can. Pours a hazy pinkish peach with a white head that dissipates nearly completely. Aroma has tart hibiscus and lime with a hint wheat and citrus backing. Flavor has tart and earthy hibiscus with a bit of straw, lime and wheat backing.

Lime- and roselle-flavoured sour by a Michigan craft brewery having achieved some fame in the sour beer world, thanks Johan for sharing the can at Bierkoning in Amsterdam. Snow white, rather thin and loose, bubbly, open and quickly dissolving head, salmon pinkish-tinged rosé colour. Alluring aroma of sweetened hibiscus tea, fresh lime flesh, ripe melon, sweet onions, tomato juice, soap, pink grapefruit. Crisp, clean onset, fruity notes with a lively lime aspect to it – actual, fresh lime blending with lime-like esteriness and sourness – softish in carbonation, but still a bit minerally and in any case very refreshing; wheaty soapiness and thin breadiness under this ongoing lime factor, both gently and quenching sour and aromatic, drying softly, leads to a flowery, aromatic, perfumey but also very citric finish, with a gypsum-like note lingering. Unexpectedly nice little kettle sour, light-footed and thin, but very elegant, with the floral-perfumey aspect of the roselle (Hibiscus) and the tropical, soft sourness of the lime very cleverly integrated into the whole. Surprisingly well done, I need more from this brewery!

16 ounce can into tulip glass, canned in 3/2019. Pours lightly hazy golden/orange/pink color with a 1-2 finger fairly dense and fluffy head with solid retention, that reduces to a minimal spotty lace cap that lingers. Minimal spotty lacing on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of big juicy/tart/tangy limes, lemon, citrus peel/zest, hibiscus, cranberry, strawberry, gooseberry, orange, grapefruit, peach, pear, apricot, passion fruit, papaya, mango, watermelon, red/green apple, white grape/wine, peppercorn, hay, straw, herbal, floral, grass, wheat, cracker, white bread, light leathery/musty/lacto funk, and yeast earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of fruity/funky/acidic/spicy yeast, citrus/tropical hops, lime, hibiscus, and moderate pale/wheat malt notes; with great strength. Taste of big juicy/tart/tangy limes, lemon, citrus peel/zest, hibiscus, cranberry, strawberry, gooseberry, orange, grapefruit, peach, pear, apricot, passion fruit, papaya, mango, watermelon, red/green apple, white grape/wine, peppercorn, hay, straw, herbal, floral, grass, wheat, cracker, white bread, light leathery/musty/lacto funk, and yeast earthiness. Light-moderate fruity/lactic tartness; peppery Brett spiciness; hibiscus tang; and light herbal, floral, grassy bitterness on the finish. Lingering notes of tart/tangy limes, lemon, citrus peel/zest, hibiscus, berries, orange, grapefruit, peach, pear, apricot, passion fruit, papaya, mango, watermelon, red/green apple, white grape/wine, peppercorn, hay, straw, herbal, floral, grass, wheat, cracker, white bread, light leathery/musty/lacto funk, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Awesome complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/funky/acidic/spicy yeast, citrus/tropical hops, lime, hibiscus, and moderate pale/wheat malt flavors; with a great malt/tart/spiciness, and tangy fruit balance; with no puckering/astringent flavors after the finish. Light-moderate increasing dryness from lingering tang/tartness, spiciness, and carbonation. Medium-plus and light-medium body; with a very smooth, moderately bready/grainy/acidic/tangy/tannic, fairly crisp, and lightly sticky balanced mouthfeel that is great. Zero warming alcohol as expected of 3.6%. Overall this is an awesome fruited wild ale. All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/funky/acidic/spicy yeast, citrus/tropical hops, lime, hibiscus, and moderate pale/wheat malt flavors; very smooth, crisp, and refreshing to drink with the modestly acidic/tangy/tannic/drying finish; not overly lactic. Very flavorful and not watery for the ABV. Very well rounded Brett/bacteria complexity; with balanced Citra hops, limes, and hibiscus flavors; with a solid pale/wheat malt backbone against acidity. Minimal residual sweetness with crisp dryness. A really enjoyable offering, and impressive style example as expected.
