With all the interest in Belgian ales and in the monasteries that brew them, it’s time to remind the world that here in the U.S. we have a Monk of our own. Jazz legend Thelonious Monk is the inspiration for North Coast Brewing’s Belgian-style Abbey Ale. With an ABV of over 9%, this strong dark ale is rich and robust. Available in a handsome 750 ml bottle with crown and capsule finish or 12 oz. 4-Packs. The label features the Jazz master himself, a portrait by California artist Eric Grbich.

750 ml bottle. Pours a dark garnet red with little head. Aromas of roasted malt, dark fruit, and toffee. Creamy. Slightly sour and spicy. Flavors of malts and brown sugar, though bitter finish and noticable alcohol.

From a 355ml bottle on 23/4/2012. Pours a cloudy dark brown with a smallish head. Has a nice caramel and fruity aroma, with a touch of chocolate. This is a malty beast with lots of caramel and sticky toffee up front. There’s also quite a bit of sweet dark fruit, some brown sugar, and a powerful spicy, yeasty alcohol kick. An enjoyable, big Belgian style ale.

Bottle @ home. Pours a clear, reddish brown appearance with a light brown head. Rich dark/caramel chocolate, rich dark fruity, plum, a touch citrusy, sweet malty aroma that superb. Tons of dark fruit, plum, raisin, rich chocolate malty flavor with some toffee, caramel, and tangy notes. A touch of booze on the finish but not bad. Nice Belgian Ale.

Bohemian Cavern, DC draft ($7): I suppose that a jazz club is an appropriate place to try this brew. It was also cheap and poured into a full size pint glass, which, of course, is not the right glass for this brew. In any case, it pours a light brown with a beige head. Aroma got some Belgian yeast, but mostly plenty of fruitiness. Taste was a little disappointing. Nothing that complex. Alcohol was very well-covered (it seemed like I was drinking a much lighter beer). Very mild hop bitterness. Mild sweetness. This was kind of a run of the mill BSA.

355 ml bottle bought @ Systembolaget. Pours dark amber with a big fizzy caramel brownish white head that quickly dissipates without leaving much trace on the glass. Smell is sweet with caramel, pears, plums, raisins, dark bread bread, yeasty esters, lemon zest, very ripe apples and hints of alcohol. Taste is very sweet and tiny bitter with sweet fruits, especially pears, in sugar syrup, dark bread, hints of spices, hints of metal, some alcohol, wood, plums and very ripe grapes. Mouthfeel is round, medium to full bodied and almost without carbonation. Finish is sweet and tiny sour with pears, plums, grapes, caramel and lemon zest. Too flat to really suit me but still solid and drinkable.

750 ml bottle from local Market Basket for $7.99. Used a tumbler. Crimson color with steady Co2. Larger white head, dissipated to a thin layer that sit on the surface, have light lace. Aroma is yeasty, sweet candy sugar and honey, a touch of cherry esters. The taste includes fruits as well as some molasses, raisins, and lots of sugar. ABV hidden real well is a nice attribute. No problems here but… the flavor doesn’t really do it for me. It’s like drinking a weak Abby Dubble. Body is real thin, and it really falls short in flavor for this brewery.

"Had this at the Argonaut Restaurant / Bar on H-Street in Washington DC. Paid $8 USD and served to me in a tulip glass. A - 2 Finger head, deep amber and hard to see through. Looked like most belgian style dark ales. S - Bready, brown sugar and cinnamon. Smelled like Christmas. T - Wow. Bread, malt, sugars and cream. There’s not much else to say. It’s a very holidy-esque beer. M - Heavy, sweet and dry. Very lingering alcohol taste. O - I’d love to have this with a slice of Pumpkin pie but not with the Spinach Ravioli that I ordered. That was a weird pairing."
