With all the interest in Belgian ales and in the monasteries that brew them, it’s time to remind the world that here in the U.S. we have a Monk of our own. Jazz legend Thelonious Monk is the inspiration for North Coast Brewing’s Belgian-style Abbey Ale. With an ABV of over 9%, this strong dark ale is rich and robust. Available in a handsome 750 ml bottle with crown and capsule finish or 12 oz. 4-Packs. The label features the Jazz master himself, a portrait by California artist Eric Grbich.

Brother Thelonious is produced under a licensing agreement with the Thelonious Monk Estate. North Coast Brewing is proud to make a donation from the sale of every bottle and keg of Brother Thelonious Belgian Style Abbey Ale to the Jazz education programs of the Monterey Jazz Festival.

Red-brown with a solid tan head. Strong caramel and berry aroma. Heavy, thick sweetness. Caramel-apple, berry, fruit syrup. A ton of flavor...almost overbearingly sweet.

Nudelig lukt. Fin gylden-rød farge. Fruktig nesten på kanten til vin smak. Et godt desert øl.

8/V/13 - 12Fl. Oz. bottle from Canal's Liquors (Mt. Ephraim, NJ) @ home - BB: no clue - 2011 vintage (2013-449)

Note: recently I thought I had drunk the last bottle we brought from our honeymoon, but it was not . THIS was. And it was delicious. Shared with my lovely wife, of course.

Little cloudy red brown beer, creamy beige head, little stable, non adhesive. Aroma: lots of sweet malts, caramel, dried fruits, mocha, some chocolate, forest fruits, black berries, dark cherries. Aftertaste: slightly sour touch, dried fruits, cherry jam, bit of alcohol, little bitter, raisins. Very nice beer.

Location: 12 oz bottle from Buy Rite, 1/13/13

Aroma: The nose is sweet and boozy, with notes of raisin/dark fruits, caramel, and spice
Appearance: Pours a murky brownish-orange color with a small off-white head and minimal lace
Flavor: It leans strongly toward sweet, with dark fruits, dark malts, and booze being the main components
Palate: The body is medium-full and it is fairly heavy on the palate, with a slight tingle, and a sticky finish
Overall Impression: Another member of the "How the...?" club (as in: How the heck have I not rated this before?). This is a well-made Belgian strong. It has a lot of really nice components to it. I would prefer a little something to balance the sweetness and the stickiness, but overall, it is good stuff.

Mörk färg. Spritig doft med inslag av russin, daddlar. Kraftfull smak med hög sötma som stannar kvar i munhålan. Ett bra försök men likväl en blekare kopia av de belgiska orginalen.
