With all the interest in Belgian ales and in the monasteries that brew them, it’s time to remind the world that here in the U.S. we have a Monk of our own. Jazz legend Thelonious Monk is the inspiration for North Coast Brewing’s Belgian-style Abbey Ale. With an ABV of over 9%, this strong dark ale is rich and robust. Available in a handsome 750 ml bottle with crown and capsule finish or 12 oz. 4-Packs. The label features the Jazz master himself, a portrait by California artist Eric Grbich.
Brother Thelonious is produced under a licensing agreement with the Thelonious Monk Estate. North Coast Brewing is proud to make a donation from the sale of every bottle and keg of Brother Thelonious Belgian Style Abbey Ale to the Jazz education programs of the Monterey Jazz Festival.

Gylden brun klar med beige tynt skum. Mørk stenfrukt og karamellukt. Søt og salt smak. Kort søt og noe bitter ettersmak. Medium- kullsyre.

Poured from a bottle it is a dark amber without a head. Tqhe aroma is Malty with a flavor of licorice. The taste is citrus.blended with licorice. The livorice flavor lingers on the palate

From a 12 oz bottle shared in Avon NC. Pours a clear amber with an ecru head. Aroma of tart cherries. Flavors of white grapes with some tropical fruit notes. Medium bodied, moderate carbonation, tart finish.

Bottle sample at a tasting at the Beer & Beyond shop. Thanks kerenmk. 9.4%. Pretty clear deep amber. Aroma of caramel, fruits and a bit of cadny notes. Sweet flavor with malt, caramel, fruitiness and a drier finish with a spicy note and a bit of alcohol. Medium-bodied, alcohol is very well-hidden for 9.4%.

2009 bottle, listed at 9.4% abv. Sweet smell with some maple and molasses to it. Rich brown color with a clingy thin head. Taste is pretty sweet, but not cloying. Has rich complex backing of molasses, and sweet pipe tobacco I used to get my dad on Father’s Day. Feels like some oak here, but nothing in here says this has been in a barrel. Just part of the complexity. No noticeable bitterness. Bits of sherry and bourbon, some dark fruit, round out the complex character here. Holds up well when aged for 4 years!

9.4% bottle from Rakuten. Dark brown mellow brown color, minimal to non-existent head. Malty fig, plum, fruity aroma. The mouthfeel is of a zesty light carbonation. The flavor is sweet, typical fruity Belgian yeast esters with a few spice notes. A nice abbey ale from the US which is worth trying out.

Tap at Stagshead. Pours ruby with a fruity and lightly spiced nose. Tastes of hi-c, figs, caramel, Belgian spices, malt, cough syrup, and alcohol. Warming booze on finish but not sticky and quite drinkable.
