With all the interest in Belgian ales and in the monasteries that brew them, it’s time to remind the world that here in the U.S. we have a Monk of our own. Jazz legend Thelonious Monk is the inspiration for North Coast Brewing’s Belgian-style Abbey Ale. With an ABV of over 9%, this strong dark ale is rich and robust. Available in a handsome 750 ml bottle with crown and capsule finish or 12 oz. 4-Packs. The label features the Jazz master himself, a portrait by California artist Eric Grbich.

Brother Thelonious is produced under a licensing agreement with the Thelonious Monk Estate. North Coast Brewing is proud to make a donation from the sale of every bottle and keg of Brother Thelonious Belgian Style Abbey Ale to the Jazz education programs of the Monterey Jazz Festival.

Bottle @ weekly tasting shared by Dutchdrebus. Clear dark red, dark amber to purple color, medium sized off-white head that lasts for quite a while. Aroma is malts, sweetish, lightly iron, more sweetness. Taste malts, sweetness again, (Dutch) "taai-taai", slightly alcohol, some herbs or spices. Medium to full body, suitable carbonation. One of the best Belgian Strong Ales I’ve had I think, at least one of the best Belgian style beers from the US. Well done!

Bottle @ benzai. Clear brown colour with a large off-white head. Quite the looker. Smells sweet, malts, herbs, slightly metallic. Tastes pretty herbal, cinnamon, gingerbread, taai taai, brown sugar- but not in a bad way. Full body, soft carbo.

Bottle. Raisin, apple, toffee malt, and straw aroma. Dark amber with small head. Mildly sweet raisin, toffee malt, and moderately bitter herbal citrus peel flavor. Decent body. Pretty good but kind of light.

Bottle. Hop Hideout, Sheffield. Clear, copper colour. Dense, lasting, pale tan head. Dried fig and raisin on the nose. Hints of vanilla and cinammon. Banana and yeasty esters. Chocolatey, toffee malts. Smells lovely. Taste is light, spicy sweet. Hint of spicy dry. Palate is smooth, although a tad thin. A little slick and sickly, maybe. Finishes with some savoury, saline notes. Sets off good, then gets a bit odd really.

Dark amber colur with a nice off white head. Good lacing. Nice toffe, dried fruits and some roasted notes in the aroma. Mellow sweet and an ok bitterness. Medium to full body and a pleasant carbonation. Kind of oily texture. Well balanced stuff. Flavor does not vanish. Dark malt, toffee, dried fruits and mild roasted. Lovely evening sipper.

Bottle. A- Raisins, spice, rubbing alcohol. A- Mahogany color, clear liquid, off white head. T- Raisins, dark fruits, tootsie rolls, malty, alcohol. P- Medium body, average texture, average carbonation, strong finish. O- Part of me felt this was really complex and another part of me felt it was a little one dimensional. Had some raisin and dark fruit notes and a bit of alcohol burn but otherwise smooth and pretty good.

Moderately sweet and mildly bitter flavour, full bodied with a smooth carbonation. Robust dark and slightly roasty malty base with notes of caramel, fruit punch, spices and dark chocolate; moderately sweet and roasty malty finish with notes of dried fruits, dark chocolate and spices. Complex and flavourful. 04.V.15

Bottle from gbbf 2015 and drunk at home. Ester aroma dark brown malts some raisin. It’s a quad I guess. Up against the best of the Belgians it holds up pretty well a touch boozy . Decent dark fruits some sour dark cherry even. Dates and prunes. It’s decent .

Poured from 750ml bottle dark amber brown with an off white lingering head. Aromas of red fruit bread clove and alcohol. Taste is similar with hints of caramel and and nice lingering alcohol finish. My only issue is that it’s a tad sweet.
