With all the interest in Belgian ales and in the monasteries that brew them, it’s time to remind the world that here in the U.S. we have a Monk of our own. Jazz legend Thelonious Monk is the inspiration for North Coast Brewing’s Belgian-style Abbey Ale. With an ABV of over 9%, this strong dark ale is rich and robust. Available in a handsome 750 ml bottle with crown and capsule finish or 12 oz. 4-Packs. The label features the Jazz master himself, a portrait by California artist Eric Grbich.

Brother Thelonious is produced under a licensing agreement with the Thelonious Monk Estate. North Coast Brewing is proud to make a donation from the sale of every bottle and keg of Brother Thelonious Belgian Style Abbey Ale to the Jazz education programs of the Monterey Jazz Festival.

Bottle. Dark amber-reddish color with small white head. Aroma is prunes, chocolate, a bit nutty. Taste is sweet, dark fruits, a bit booze. Okay complexity, could be a bit more edgy. Smooth carbonation. Not bad!

A chestnut brown, a head is big and beige. Aroma has richness of fruits, raisins and dates, also some red berries and spices. Taste has dried fruits, prunes and dates, hint of power of alcohol. Medium+ bodied, pleasand and smooth palate. Almost 10 months old, now nicely smooth and balanced, could be more complex. Dried fruits in the liquid format.

Bottle from Candia Road Convenience in Candia, NH. Aroma is strong mix of dark fruit, brown bread, doughy yeast. Appearance is clear, dark ruby red brown with mild sparkle and 1/2 finger width off white foamy head that dissipates to thin ring and minimal lacing. Taste is sweet dark fruit and fig with mild yeast. Palate is medium bodied with a slippery feel to it (almost like your tongue gets coated with silicone spray) with average-to-lively carbonation and finish as taste. Overall, a nice, solid beer all around.

19th May 2015: 750ml cork and caged bottle shared with my wife while on holiday in California. Ruby red hue to the mahogany body, the head a large beige blanket of foaming bubbles on all three glasses. Fruity, malty nose and taste, fairly sweet and rich in flavour: spicy with a raisin trace to the taste also. Alcohol is not hidden too well, even though the body and flavours have depth and robustness. Really enjoyed it, even if I end up with a head ache tomorrow (this was/is the third beer of a session).

Klare dunkel rötlichbraune Farbe, geringe beige Schaumkrone. Geruch nach überreifen roten Früchten, leicht alkoholisch, kräftig malzig. Geschmack nach sehr reifen roten Früchten, Karamell, alkoholisch, gut!

12oz bottle from Liquor barn in Bowling Green, Kentucky. Poured into a shaker pint. Beautiful reddish brown color with soapy off-white head. Bready and dark fruit aroma present. Really feels like an authentic Belgian beer. Alcohol is masked well. Smooth and dangerously easy to drink. --- Beer merged from original tick of Brother Thelonious on 08 May 2015 at 14:20 - Score: 8

Bottle at Appellation Comely Bank tasting. I think this was from allmyvinyl. Appearance - deep copper and clear. Some head. Nose - dried fruits, booze, plus a background soapy note which was unexpected. Taste - more of the same. Redcurrants too. Palate - medium bodied with a creamy yet tangy texture and a dry yet boozy finish. Overall - a solid citizen considering the style.
