Viven Smoked Porter is a fairly bitter porter beer, with a very smokey flavour. Accents of coffee and dark chocolate make for a powerful aroma in your glass.

330 ml bottle into tulip glass, best before 5/26/2016. Pours pitch black color with a 1 finger dense tan head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, wood smoke, molasses, toast, dark bread, light char, light dark fruit, light pepper, and roast/smoke/yeast earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of dark/roast/smoked malt and light-moderate yeast notes; with good strength. Taste of dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, wood smoke, molasses, toast, dark bread, light dark fruit, light pepper, light char, and roast/smoke/yeast earthiness. Light roast bitterness/yeast spice on the finish; with lingering notes of dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, wood smoke, molasses, toast, dark bread, light char, light dark fruit/pepper, and roast/smokey earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Damn nice robustness, balance, and complexity of dark/roast/smoked malt and light-moderate yeast flavors; with a great roasted bitterness/sweetness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, moderately creamy, and slightly chalky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is an excellent Belgian influenced smoked porter style. All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/smoked malt and light-moderate yeast flavors; and very smooth to drink for the ABV. A very enjoyable offering.

Bottle from Appellation Wines. Black body with a huge tan head. Nice lacing. Aroma of chocolate ice-cream, a hint of smoke, ash and peat. Flavour of chocolate orange, berries and banana bread. Medium body with a frothy mouthfeel. Soft fizz. Bold flavour with lots of complexity - one sip tastes smokey, the next - hoppy, the next - chocolately... Lovely stuff.

Bottle from Appellation Wines Comely Bank. Appearance - opaque black and glossy. Nice fawn head. Nose - milk chocolate, light funky note, dry spice or liquorice. Taste - more liquorice melded into the chocolate. Palate - medium bodied with a creamy texture and a very dry finish. Overall - supposed to be a porter but it has elements of dry stout style.

Bottle @ De Republiek, Brugge. Black with a thin creamy off-white head. Has a mid and healthy roasted malt aroma and taste. Not overstated and a relatively easy drinking texture for it.

33 cl. bottle @ home, bought @ Hogerdijk, Culemborg. Black with a beige head. Smoky aroma with lots of roasted malts. The smoke aroma and taste diminishes rather quickly leaving a more typical, but still enjoyable, porter.

Pitch black, two fingers creamy tan head, good retention, slowly recedes to a thick creamy layer, heavy lacing. Kinda mild smoked bacon aroma, cocoa, coffee, dark chocolate. Taste medium smoked bitterness, slightly sweet, coffee and chocolate. Medium body, oily to light creamy texture, soft carbonation; lingering dry bitter finish, still some chocolate, bit earthy, bit peaty. Very well-balanced porter, very nice.
