OK. 9/8/8/8/9/8

One of this year's Foreign Legion beers by Kompaan, from a can shared by Craftmember. Apparently spiced with the hottest pepper in the world - bring it on! Pale beige, moussy to creamy, slowly opening head over a misty rusty bronze-brown robe (rather than the apparently intended red), hazy. Aroma of dried apricot, ground walnuts, whisky, sherry including its nuttiness, vanillin-scenting oak wood, dried orange peel, dried chili peppers, pecan nut pie, almond even, soggy toast, touch pipe tobacco faraway in the background. Sweetish onset, rather clean with notes of dried apricot, medlar, pear and deep-fried banana chips with a very light touch of green olive, soft carb; capsaicin heat is noticeable early on but travels along nicely with a toasty, dry-caramelly, biscuity malt profile quickly becoming notably nutty (peanut to even walnut). The toasty bitterish aspect of the malt bill is accentuated by leafy, lightly citrusy hops but subtly so, while woody tannins add dryness. Retronasal vanillin from the oak shows up along with warming, brandy-like alcohol. All the while, this Carolina Reaper heat is present and very palpable and lingers beyond everything else, but to me personally it is very well integrated into the whole: I did not have the feeling that it disturbed the other flavours, which - for such an excessively sharp pepper variety - is an admirable feat in my view. That said, your personal capsaicin tolerance degree will indeed determine whether you are physically able to enjoy this daring beer or not - and mine is above average for a Flemish person, I suppose...

Can shared. Bit hazy dark amber. Sweet malts, vanilla, earthy, caramel, toffee, soft alcohol. Quite sweet, medium bitter. Over medium bodied, decent amount of heat but not too much.
