Ever since the Viking era, the Christmas beer tradition has been strong in Norway. As stated in the 'Gulatingsloven' (a regional law text valid until 1274), every farmer was bound by the law to brew beer for Christmas and christen it according to the new faith, otherwise running the risk of losing his assets to the king and bishop. The Christmas beer was normally brewed from the best grain of the season and would be strong with a rich malt flavour. Ringnes Julebokk (Christmas Bock) is a doppelbock brewed with only the best malts - and plenty of it.
Ringnes Christmas Bock is rich in taste with a complex aroma of roasted malt, coffee, leather, spices, dried fruit and some notes of red wine. The colour is dark with a ruby hue. The taste is complex and full-bodied with a rich bitterness.

33cl bottle from KnutAlbert, thanks very much Knut. Very very deep brown/red with thin tan head. Nice dark malt aroma, some soy sauce. Strong dark and rather good. Little bit of whiskyish malt. Hey, not subtle, but good.

From 33 cL bottle. Pours reddish/amber with a white head. Dry raisin and dry aroma. Very dry liqourice and alcohol flavour. Malty. Dry finish. That was really good, surprisingly :)

(Bottle 33 cl) Courtesy of yngwie. Clear, warm, orangey brown with a dense, beige head. Fantastic aroma of overripe fruit. Very full-bodied full of roasted, malty accents with lots of overripe fruit - almost port-like notes. The finish is dry. Excellent. 290607

330ml bottle enjoyed at home. Comprehensive aroma of liquorice, burnt dark malts and dark fruits. Deep mahogany body under a tiny off-white head. Taste of roasted sweet malts with additional hints of black coffee and anise. A spicy and powerfull beverage with lasting, moderate bitterness in the finish. Maybe a little bit too sweet (14.12.2006).

(Bottle at RBESG 2006) Clear deep red color, tan head. Sweet bitter almond and raissin scent. Sweet and alcohol taste. Normal mouth feel, low bitterness.

Bottled. Dark ruby red colour, small brown head. Aroma is plum and malts. Flavour caramellish malts, alcohol and some grassy notes. All in a good balance. Sweet and warming brew. Slight roastiness also noteable. Nice Christmas seasonal.

Bottle. Black brown colour with a beige head. Mostly roasted coffee in the aroma. Roasted coffe and malt and hops in the flavour.

Bottle. Sweet, roasted aroma, though not very powerful considering the ABV. Very dark brown colour, small stable head. The flavour is nice. Powerful and peppery with notes of liquorice and roasted malt. I sense a little fruituness behind the other flavours. The alcohol is nicely noticeable. Pleasant, low carbonation.

Bottled. (2005) Dark brown, almost black, with a decent, dense tan head. Somewhere in the process, they forgot to put in the aroma, thers just hints of roasted malt and hops. Sweet malt, hops, coffee and some hints of chocolate in aroma. Definately a warming beer, the alcohol is not dominant at all, and it leaves a roasted and bitter finish. Full bodied. This one is said to be brewed by Ringnes Arendal, and is definately Ringnes’ best beer. Pity the aroma is so light. I can’t let the aroma thing go. It should not be possible to make a beer of this kind, and leave it with almost no aroma? But of course, if you take a good sniff, the little aroma that’s in the beer is good. Bottle. (2007) Poured with a clear, dark brown body, and a dense, beige head on top. A bit small head maybe, and certainly diminishig too quickly, but the beer looks nice. As last time, it is a bit weak on the aroma, but there’s a good dash of dried fruits, quite a lot roasted malt and hops, and some alcohol as well. Some chocolate and coffee too, but not much. I wonder if the aroma is more sweetish than earlier years, the aroma leads my thoughts to dark Belgian strong ales. The flavor is sweet as well, with dried fruits and sugar playing major parts. They are backed up by roasted malt giving some coffee flavors, a bitterness to balance it, and a pleasant touch of alcohol. Well, maybe not a touch, more a punch actually. It is quite warming and full-bodied. The finish is long, sweet, bitter and has a nice, warming alcohol burn. I think this years edition is sweeter and with more pronounced alcohol flavor than they have had the last two years, but it is certainly nice. Not the beer to enjoy with Christmas dinner, but it goes well on it’s own, for example as a night cap. Certainly the best beer from the "old" Norwegian breweries. (071126)
