Ever since the Viking era, the Christmas beer tradition has been strong in Norway. As stated in the 'Gulatingsloven' (a regional law text valid until 1274), every farmer was bound by the law to brew beer for Christmas and christen it according to the new faith, otherwise running the risk of losing his assets to the king and bishop. The Christmas beer was normally brewed from the best grain of the season and would be strong with a rich malt flavour. Ringnes Julebokk (Christmas Bock) is a doppelbock brewed with only the best malts - and plenty of it.
Ringnes Christmas Bock is rich in taste with a complex aroma of roasted malt, coffee, leather, spices, dried fruit and some notes of red wine. The colour is dark with a ruby hue. The taste is complex and full-bodied with a rich bitterness.

Large, creamy, tan head; dark red visible through the body with some difficulty. Aroma is sweet maltiness with some hops, relatively faint. (How on earth did they brew this to 9.9%, with huge gravity, and leave no aroma? If done on purpose it requires uncommon skill, and a pretty perverse mind.) Taste is deep, round, and sweet, with notes of chocolate, coffee, and cloves. Aftertaste is dry, roasty and full of cloves and other spices. Very good. The best beer ever produced under the Ringnes label by a very long stretch.

There is a good bock tradition in Norway, and this beer has been a nice addtition. One of the best Christmas beers in the latest years.

Bottled at RBESG. Clear dark brown. Sweet and caramelly with clean, hard mouthfeel and near full body. Sweet with notes of syrup and molasses. Low bitterness. Really solid and surprisingly well made for a Ringnes.

A red-brown beer with a thin orange head. The aroma is sweet with notes of caramel as well as hints of alcohol. The flavor is sweet with notes of the alcohol as well as caramel.

Brewed for every Christmas since 1999, this year (2002) unbelievably is the first (but definitely not the last!) year I have had this excellent beer. The recipe this year is supposed to be slightly less sweet than in 2001. Dark reddish brown colour, low head, pleasant but initially surprisingly weak roasted aroma (improves as the beer warms up). This is par excellence the most flavourful beer in Norway for nearly a century (between 1909 and 1999 max. ABV was 7%). Not as subtle and complex flavour as Aass Bock, but robust as hell. Roasted malts and coffee abound, Christmas spices and decent hops are balanced by a sufficient sweetness. Alcohol (9,9%) is well hidden. Robust aftertaste. Now THIS is a beer for the big boys! (OK, for big girls too.)
