Schramm’s Erik the Red was named for Erik Thorvaldsson, a classic Norseman, who sailed around the North Atlantic like it was a wading pool. Erik the Red is one of Ken Schramm’s signature meads, a member of his original line-up. This bold blend of red raspberries and tart cherries has been refined and improved upon over decades of batches.

375 ml bottle. Batch 4. Pours a deep purple color. The aroma is medium-strong with raspberries. The taste on the other had is a big blast of rather tart raspberries. The honey offsets the berries very nicely making this very gulpable. The palate is full and silky smooth. Finishes long and tart. Overall: Top shelf stuff.

Taster showing dark opaque vinous red.
The nose shows deep notes of rich and sweet bing cherry.
The palate is medium bodied and extremely cherry forward. Lighter vinous notes in the background with a mild astringency and tartness.

Pours dark red. Full on fruityness. Cherry overpowering the raspberries. Taste is full, sweet, intense. Sticky, raspberry is there, but not to be recognized as a seperate fruit. The blend clearly is red fruit, but gets surprisingly complex.

Bottle sample at a Yana's tasting at Max's place. Deep purple. So much jammy cherry and raspberry, honey, sweet and sourish, light alcoholic note, rounded. Outstanding.

Courtesy of Ryan, corked bottle
Dark burgundy colour, slightly opaque. The aroma is almost vinous, reminiscent of Porto wine; little alcohol later. Sweet but lean, there's a great balance of sugars and alcohol; deep fruit flavour, red grape skins, cherries, elderberry, almost smoke; mild woody character from the honey, just enough to distinguish it from a fruit wine; gentle warmth.
Deep and balanced, excellent.

375ml @ Ryan's. Appearance: deep purple with no head. Aroma: lots of sour berries character with sweet cherries and honey notes. Taste: along the same lines with berry seeds character and other tannins. Overall: interesting.

375mL bottle, pours a thick, rich, dark red, like a red wine. Nose is rich and decadent, with a wonderfully rich raspberries, some cherries, and decadent honey nectar. Flavour is rich, decadent and complex, with a viscous body of raspberries, cherries, and honey nectar. Viscous, oily, almost syrupy, and with no harsh edges. What a beautiful thing.

Purplish colour. The aroma is full of raspberries. The palate brings lots of raspberries as well. It's quite sweet, and then it's got a sticky honey character, and maybe some alcohol dryness coming through in there. Sticky syrup, but definitely nice.
