A. Le Coq & Co was founded in 1807 and at the start of the 20th century production was brought from London to Tartu, where the brewing of A. Le Coq Extra Double Stout began. This was a beer that in 1912 brought A. Le Coq the title of official court supplier to the Russian throne and was allegedly the favourite beer of Nicholas II of Russia. The tsar enjoyed eating oysters, which were served with a vinaigrette sauce made from Imperial Extra Double Stout.

Now more than 100 years later we have decided to bring Imperial Stout onto the market once again. In the production of A. Le Coq Imperial Extra Double Stout we have endeavoured to follow the original recipe as closely as possible. It is a rich, dark beer with a dense brown head, dominated by dark-roasted malt barley and, typical of beers of the era, a hint of oakiness with autumn berries and sherry. The bottle has its own original label design.

Good find at chalet in n. lima, nice place. Bottle cost only 2$! Pour is big & black and large and in charge with its one inch choco moose head. Rather mild dark beer nose. Taste is fairly friendly for an imperial stout, its a burnt charcoal and old damp half burned campfire wood on a solid dark beer backbone. Much more acceptable than most imperial domestic stouts. Although its big and bold, it rarely goes over the top. Nice to have a well made example of a good tight alky laden stout for a change. I need to try more from this brewery. Nice job ah-lah cock. I'm actually enjoying this big brew, something I don't do too often with with big alky brews, especially domestic examples of imperial stouts. Gets a little edgy towards the finish. However, it never gets in yer face. Remains big and black but not insulting, clear to the end. One of the better imperial stouts I've had in a long time. Never over the top, never in yer face, never insulting; just a good example of what a decent big black beer can be: Enjoyable and friendly yet fun and forward without a nasty temperament.

Bottle from the supermarket in Tallinn. Nose is soy sauce, nuts, chocolate. Rather obvious and candy like. Black with a rocky head. Flavor is sweet, salty, full of umami, soy sauce, chocolate. Definitely a Baltic porter. Meaty and rich. Not great but not as bad as the ratings say.

Bottled 500ml (from Tallinn)
Opaque colour, small beige head. Aroma has ryebread, metal and some sweet molasses. Medium-bodied. Hard mouthfeel. Some sweetness, metal, vegetables, hard licorice candy, dark bread. Very watery imperial stout which tastes more like watery industrial (poor) Baltic Porter. To be avoided.
