When Rick started the idea for the brewery he was living at the beach. When trying to come up with a name for the Holiday beer he pictured his dog coming back from the beach with her paws covered in sand. Thus, the name Sandy Paws was born. Sandy Paws is typically a Baltic Porter, rich and malty with slightly spicy notes. This is one of our beers that we will change the recipe from year to year, it is also one of our beers that can be aged and is usually better after a year. In 2015 we switched the yeast we were using on the Sandy Paws; rather than using our house lager yeast, we decided to try fermenting it with the German Ale yeast we use for our Kolsch-style and Sticke Alt, which is probably more historically accurate for a Baltic Porter anyway. Also, the TTB decided to not allow us to use the term "Baltic Porter" on our label, so although the 2015 is done in the style of Baltic Porter the label says "Dark Lagered Ale."

16 oz can poured, picked up in season, and for some reason saved until now. Canned on 11/12/19. It's a less than warm, rainy May evening, so it almost feels like winter again anyway. Loved the can, and I'd be lying if I said it didn't play a role in my purchase of this product, the other being that it's Heater Allen and they don't make bad beer as far as I've ever known. Dense appearance, near black pour, cola tan fizz head that sticks around. Soft cocoa notes, big malt roast. This beer seems to have gotten bigger over the years, but it's still super smooth and easy drinking. About as flavorful as you can get with a lager. Just a touch sweet, but it doesn't bother me. Delicious flavorful linger. Really like this one.

500 ml bottle purchased as a single at the Made in Oregon shop at the Portland, Oregon airport. The pour is clear brown with ruby highlights and a one inch khaki head that is lasting. The aroma is a clean roast, toasty caramel malt and a grass mineral. The taste is the roast malt right away, followed by the slight sweet caramel, the grass, and moves towards a lager yeast and mineral finish. The palate is medium bodied, with active carbonation and the dry roast mineral finish. Exactly what I expect and want a Baltic Porter to be, tasty stuff.

Pretty good traditional style doppelbock lager however I wish they would have followed through in the naming of the beer to keep it fully traditional. Politically I am a progressive and so call me Square but still I like the traditional naming of things like this.

On tap at the Tin Bucket. Pours a dark brown color, some red hints, a small off white head. A big malty chocolate nose. Rich toasted malts, dark toffee, molasses, light sweet chocolates, vanilla. Great beer.

On tap at the Loyal Legion, pours a deep dark mahogany with a small tan head. Aroma brings out lager yeast, followed by toasted caramel and bready malt. Flavour is rich and rather sweet, with lager yeast, sweet malt, and dark fruits. Very sweet and distinctly lager-ish. Nice stuff.
