In Iceland, winter is not something we fear, it is something we embrace. Especially when it signals the return of our extremely-limited Winter Ale, ready to be shared around a plentiful table or a roaring fire. Brewed with hand-cut and cured spruce tips along with smoked Icelandic barley, this is the perfect brew to complement your sagas of conquest and survival.

Bottle from Corti Bros. Pours brown with a beige head. Aroma is roasty malt, a little smokiness, a touch of chocolate, and seemingly dark fruit. Med plus body. Flavor is dark, smoky malt with cacao and some darkish fruit. Not very dry, but far from sticky. Bitter enough for balance. Wonder whether cured spruce tips resemble dark fruit. Likely not, but ...

330 ml bottle, Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. ABV is 8.0%. Dark brown colour, large off-white to beige head. Aroma of malts, caramel, brown bread and sprucetips, a hint of salt, whisky and smoke. The flavour is malty and sweet, but not too much. Distinct notes of sprucetips, also notes of caramel and brown bread, hints of prunes, whisky, smoke and salt. Unusual and interesting.

330ml bottle from Vinmonopolet Langnes. A fawn-coloured head leaving spotty lacing on the glass. A deep ruby shade to a near-black body. Earthy malts and dried fruits on the nose. Well blended taste of apricot, prunes and caramel malts, slightly spiced. Jam-like ending. Well bodied and quite harmonious in the mouth. Fits the winter season. (Tromsø 16.02.2019).
