Gamme Grande Cuvée. This Doppelbock, or "Double Bock", is a dark, extra full bodied lager after the best Bavarian tradition. Such beer was created by monks for the tough fasting period of Lent. They called it "liquid bread". Look for flavor notes of chocolate, candied fruit and roasted malt.

Smells really caramel-like, especially as it warms up. I almost prefer this one colder because it’s a bit too sweet for me. Sweet caramel, a lot of milk chocolate mixed with roast malt. Some sourness, some fruit, like chocolate covered raisins. On tap at Saint Bock.

2011 bottle, 8% ABV. Dark brown with a beige head. Aroma of plums, figs, raisins, bread, Port. Sweet with lots of dried fruit, dark sugar, some chocolate. The sweetness doesn’t linger unduly and there are some light spices at the end.

Taste: Malty, some smoke and dark fruits

Cloudy chestnut. Deep fruity nose with lots of molasses. Yeasty, lightly fruity. Smooth character and very fruity finish for a doppelbock. 8 - 4 - 7 - 3 - 14 = 3.6

Spring 2009 bottle - aged 18 months. Pours deep mahogany into a stem glass. Mocha micro head with excellent retention pancakes and does not recede. Mild treacle and molasses aromas. Sweet fruitcake upfront turning to slightly toasted chocolate before the lasting slight cardboard alcohol burn...thing this one is just past.

750 c&c from Wine & Cheese in Clayton, MO. Printemps-2009. Pours very dark brown with a foamy 3 finger tan head. Aroma of very dark malt, possibly with a little dark fruit and chocolate. Med body/foamy carb. Flavor is very dark roast malt. There are some aspects that come and go - cola - chocolate - dark fruit. The finish flavor is dark malt and fruit. Very nice stuff. Not at all sticky, though certainly on the sweet side.

Bottle shared by alexsdad06 at the RBSG Grand Tasting. Thanks! I’ve always wanted to try these guys... cool. Pours a murky brown color with a medium brown head. Good head retention and lacing. The aroma is nuts and toffee with caramel and a light tart note. The taste is toffee, caramel, nutty notes and sunflower. Medium bodied.

Bottle, pours dark brown / black with a big beige head. Aroma of caramel malts. Flavour is extremely strong roasted malt, candied fruits and subtle chocolate. Extremely nice.

Huge, collapsing dark beige head over ochre-brown, but clear beer. Black chocolate and coffee, "café glacée cookies; bit uniform. Sweet, cookies-like, café glacée again the nail on the head, turning into bitterish, very roasted coffee. Maybe overroasted mocha. Well bodied and very slick. This is a sweet coffee porter. No German Doppelbock tastes as such - which does in no way make it a bad beer, just a bit of a misnomer. Grand merci à Dany!
