In 1913 the brewing of strong stout beers was started in Tartu. Stout was the beer preferred by the Russian imperial court. We regenerated the original recipe in cooperation with our friends from AF Brew from St. Petersburg. Imperial Double Extra Stout is rich and bold, yet well-balanced. Classic malt and hops were used, just like a century ago.

330ml bottle. Jet black colour with small, creamy, diminishing, minimally lacing, beige head. Intense, roasty and chocolately, dark malty and slightly caramel malty aroma, notes of dark chocolate, some couverture, dark caramel, toffee, a touch of molasses. Taste is bitter roasty, dark malty and slightly bitter hoppy, sweet-ish, chocolately, dark malty as well as slightly caramel malty, notes of dark chocolate, some couverture, dark caramel, a touch of coffee and toffee, minimally warming, alcoholic finish; overall a tad diluted flavours, low sweetness, combined roasty and hoppy bitterness.
Surprisingly watery texture, smooth and soft palate, medium, scattered, soft, minimally prickly carbonation.
Feels indeed "historic", a bit frumpy, lumpen, not as refined as, but in return more "natural" than "modern" Impy Stouts - solid.

Bottle shared by Wendigo at BBT 9/2024. BBD 11.6.2022. Med-full body, med-light carbonation. Holding up really really well over all this time. Aged excellently. Medium sweetness, med-high bitterness (mostly roasty). Medium warmth, pleasant though, well rounded. Lots of chocolate, coffee, slightly ashy. Light dried fruits. Rich, intense, very well aged. Rewarding tasty sipper. Great.

Draught@Panema, Helsinki. Pitch black colour with a mediumsized white foamy head. Aroma is kind of old school imperial stout, roasted malts, some nutty tones, tobacco and a little bit of chocolate. Flavour pretty much follows the pattern of the aroma. Fermented until quite dry, so not that sweet, which is very nice in these days of super-sweet pastry stouts.

Tap @Luppolo Station in Rome-Italy. Black pour with a brownish foam. Nose: a bit of a grassy-roast feel, green coffee. Mouth: clean in a way, filtered coffee, grassy overall.
