In 1913 the brewing of strong stout beers was started in Tartu. Stout was the beer preferred by the Russian imperial court. We regenerated the original recipe in cooperation with our friends from AF Brew from St. Petersburg. Imperial Double Extra Stout is rich and bold, yet well-balanced. Classic malt and hops were used, just like a century ago.

330ml bottle from Uba ja Humal, Tallinn. Pours pitch black with a smooth brown head. Aroma of roasty malts, cocoa beans, chocolate, hints of earthiness and mild smoked notes. Taste is sweet, earthy and slightly syrupy with some roastiness, warming alcohol, chocolate and cold coffee notes. Finish is really sweet, earthy and warming with some roastiness, syrup, chocolate and coffee. Slightly unbalanced, too sweet.

33cl Bottle sample at the brewery. Black colour, beige head. Aroma of burnt malts, hint of ink, brown malts, chocolate, some tobacco, a bit of coffee. Flavour is medium sweet, malty, chocolate, roast, ink/tar, some coffee, bitter finish. Medium bodied. Sounds like a lot of roast, but is actually quite sweet. Nice, but wasn’t blown away.

On tap at Moscow BCD’17. Opaque deep brown to black beer. Moderate capuccino coloured head. The stout feels quite classically. Massive roast, coffee, some hops. Medium sweet.

Bottle 0.33 (thanks VamboladeTolly!) Almost black, brownish-coffee foam. Aroma: wine and sweet, dried fruits, prunes, toffee, light spice such as anise and thyme, caramel and jam. Taste: strong, sparkling, caramel sweetness, prunes, port wine, anise, raspberry jam, very warming, soft, chocolate. Complex and unusual beer with Belgian notes, but like!
