Fonio Rising Pale Ale is the result of years of experimentation by our James Beard Award-winning Brewmaster, Garrett Oliver. Fonio, known as the “Seed of the Universe,” has been a staple in West Africa for over 5,000 years. It thrives without the need for fertilizers, chemicals, or irrigation, making it an ideal crop for sustainable farming. Fonio also provides critical income to smallholder farmers, many of whom are women.
“Fonio is one of the most exciting ingredients I’ve encountered in my 35 years of brewing,” says Garrett. “Not only does it offer a unique, tropical flavor that shines in Fonio Rising, but it also brings a deep, meaningful connection to the land and people who grow it. With this beer joining our year-round lineup, fonio’s potential as a crop and a brewing ingredient is finally reaching the mainstream.”
Brewed with a blend of two-row pale malt, fonio, and dry-hopped with Strata and Citra hops, Fonio Rising Pale Ale is a hoppy pale ale bursting with tropical passionfruit and citrus flavors. It’s the perfect beer for any occasion, with a snappy, refreshing finish that pairs beautifully with grilled seafood, spicy dishes, and fish tacos

(Keg at Baba dömer, Helsinki, 20240419) The beer poured golden and hazy. Its head was medium sized and white. Aroma had grass, metal and honey. Palate was medium bodied with medium carbonation. Flavours were grass, grain, honey, metal, malts and bitterness. Aftertaste was grassy, lightly sweet, and bitter. A nice brew with sweet notes and clan hop flavours.

Month old pint can A: Clear, bubbly bright yellow with a fast falling short white head. S: Bread and sweet wafer cookies with faint hay, grass and a whiff of alcohol. T: Full of bread and herbs with some fruity notes of apple, pear and berries. Strong flavors with a light booziness. M: Full body, slick texture and oily finish. Low to average carbonation. O: Not bad but I don't see the point. They make a fine pilsner. I guess if you want something stronger but not malt liquor. --- Beer merged from original tick of Fonio Rising Pale Ale on 11 Sep 2024 at 22:59 - Score: Appearance - 6 | Aroma - 6 | Flavor - 6 | Texture - 6 | Overall - 6. Original review text: 7 week old pint can A: Mostly clear medium light gold with a short head that held up. S: Soft watery aroma of lemon and orange citrus with light cracker malt. T: Follows the nose with weak lemon and oranges notes over a spicy malt base of crackers and pepper. M: Crisp and prickly texture and clean finish. O: A bit different but lacking in hops. OK but not great.

Draught, kindly shared by bergstaden, from E.C.Dahls Bar, Bryggerifestivalen 2023, second day. Bright late straw coloured body, fair white head leaving dotted spots on the glass. Modest smell of grainy fruits. Rounded taste of cereal malts added by a citric note. Mid-sweet malty ending. Clean on the swallow. Fair enough. (Trondheim, 04.08.2023).
