Slow, extended ageing before bottling differentiates this style from simply being a strong stout or porter. It makes Ridgeway Imperial Russian Stout considerably more vinous and sharp than an export stout. There is just that little nod towards a lambic beer, with very roast and very bitter flavours. The bitterness mellows over time in the bottle so the style is not intended to be overtly hoppy.

Flaske nr. 4277 - 0,33l fra Alko Muonio. Drukket i heimen 5 Apr 14. Ultradypbrun/svart. Høyt luftig skum med litt farge. Skummet varer. Pen kniplingslacing. Nydelig - men avdempet - aroma av lakris & sjokolade. Silkemyk munnfølelse. Smaken er fint avbalansert. Litt syrlig. Lakris. Sjokolade.

330ml bottle, 2014 vintage, bottle number 4279. Thanks to Finn! Firm, bubbly beige head, mostly remaining on top of a near-black body. Moderate aromas of brown malts, including chocolate and nuts, slightly roasted. Rich roasted taste of black coffee and chocolate with dark fruity hints beneath. Long-lived dark bitter ending supported by warming alcohol. Full bodied and smooth. A pleasure to drink stuff like this (Tromsø 14.04.2014).

330ml bottle. Pours an opaque brown-black with a soapy beige head that dissipates away after a minute or two. Pleasant cocoa, chocolate aroma, a hint of raisin. Really clean and drinkable for the ABV. The chocolate tones are quite bold, like they added something beyond malt, has that Nestle Quik thing going on. Quite a decent beer, but doesn’t quite have the malt depth I’d hoped for.

Poured a clear dark brown with a reddish hue and a thin broken tan head. The aroma is rich roasted malt, molasses, dark chocolate, coffee and alcohol. The flavour is medium to strong bitter with a light oily strong alcoholic bitter malt palate and a long bitter finish. Medium to full bodied with soft carbonation. I would have liked a little more creaminess in the texture but otherwise a very good beer indeed.

Fad. Meget mørkebrun, klar. Lille, kompakt lysebrunt skum. Kaffe og lakrids i aroma, samme i smag, plus mørk, bitter chokolade. Vinøs uden at være boozy. Lav carb. Bitterheden giver god tør eftersmag. Let fornemmelse på trods af ABV.

Bottled (thanks fonefan). Very deep copper colour with a small slightly off-white head. Aroma is coffee, roasted malts, some wood and mild ripe fruits. Flavour is roasted malts, some floral notes along with wood and mild caramel. Hides the ABV quite well, but isn’t all too interesting overall.

A colablack beer with a dense, medium and beige head. The nose is mainly roasted with coffee, also some liquirice and sweetness of berries. Taste is strong and roasted, quite high sweetness is balancing the roastiness, some liquirice. The end is almost burned, hopped, slightly herbal and long. Almost full bodied, the strong taste is slows down the drinkability. Not a top quality IS but quite nice just as a beer.
