Slow, extended ageing before bottling differentiates this style from simply being a strong stout or porter. It makes Ridgeway Imperial Russian Stout considerably more vinous and sharp than an export stout. There is just that little nod towards a lambic beer, with very roast and very bitter flavours. The bitterness mellows over time in the bottle so the style is not intended to be overtly hoppy.

Bottle. Creamy off-white good mostly lasting head. Black colour. Heavy malty and moderate hoppy aroma. Heavy bitter flavor. Strong chocolate notes. Long heavy bitter finish. Creamy palate.

Flavour: Smooth, chocolate, roasted malt, coffee, some alcohol. Loses some flavour in the finish.

(Bottle, 0.33 l - 2014 vintage, bottle #5467, lot F16 15, from Alko, 20140221) The beer poured black. Its head was medium sized and lightly brown. Aroma had liquorice, ash, sweetness and burnt malts. Palate was full bodied, warmimg and oily with medium carbonation. Flavours were burnt malts, hops, alcohol, sweetness, liquorice, ash and bitterness. Aftertaste was burnt and bitter. A bit too burnt and boozy to be a very good imperial stout.

Bottle from Alko. Vintage 2014, bottle nr 727. Pours black in color with a brown head. Licorice, burnt wood, smoke and roasted malt in aroma. Quite interesting actually. Flavor has licorice, medicinal herbs, roastedness, dark chocolate and some citrusy notes in the dry finish. Ashy. Full bodied. Quite enjoyable and complex. I like it. Some similarities with Siperia.

Bottle into a snifter. Pours very dark, almost pitch black. Bit of a head at first which doesn’t last long. Roasty aromas with hints of coffee and chocolate. Taste is more of the same, bitter chocolate, some coffee, malty. Lack of body lets this one down a bit.

Bottle 330ml. @ [ (chriso Pre-GBBF Shindig) by chriso - London ].Clear dark red brown colour with a average, frothy, good lacing, mostly lasting, off-white head. Aroma is moderate to heavy malty, roasted, caramel, laber larver, chocolate. Flavour is moderate to heavy sweet and moderate bitter with a long duration, laber larver, chocolate. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft. [20130810]

Aroma has cocoa and some hayish tones – feels quite English. Flavour has salty licorice, some soy sauce and distant herbal tones. Feels a bit watery for this ABV. An imperial stout in English way.

Deep ruby color, small off-white head. Weak nose has some toasted malts, alcohol and licorice. Medium-bodied. Quite simple 10% RIS. Light toasted malts, alcohol and coffee. Doesn’t impress me although no fails here.

Bottle @ home shared with Dutchdrebus and Ansjelaah. Opaque pitch black color, average sized lightly tan head. Smell and taste malts, slightly a touch of chocolate, wood, lightly alcohol. Some liquor and dark and lightly roasted malts as well. Those come through a bit later. Medium to full body, medium carbonation. Very nice!
