Slow, extended ageing before bottling differentiates this style from simply being a strong stout or porter. It makes Ridgeway Imperial Russian Stout considerably more vinous and sharp than an export stout. There is just that little nod towards a lambic beer, with very roast and very bitter flavours. The bitterness mellows over time in the bottle so the style is not intended to be overtly hoppy.

Bottle @ benzai. Dark brown colour with a small off white head. Smells sweet, chocolate, caramel. Tastes chocolate, sweet, sugary, roasty. Medium body, nice carbo.

Bottle from York Beer and Wine. Clear, dark chestnut brown. Tan coloured halo on top. Aroma is licorice, dark fruits, a little vanilla sweetness. Taste is initially sweet, in a chocolately kind of way, followed up by a massive bosh of not entirely expected bitterness. One for a year or two in the cellar? Still enjoyable, though.

Bottle at ChrisO’s Great and Powerful Pre-GBBF Tasting - Are You Scottish Edition (London, 2013). Pours clear brown with a bubbly white head. Nose holds lots of baking cocoa, light roast and chocolate cake. Medium sweet flavor with dry, chalky cocoa, light earth, brownies. Medium bodied with fine carbonation. Moderately sweet finish with more dry chocolate. Basic character but pretty well balanced and very tasty.

Bottle #1050 10%. Very dark brown with small beige head. Aroma is roasted malts, chocolate, coffee and liquorice. Flavour is roasted malts, chocolate, coffee, liquorice, medium sweet, hop and medium bitter.

Bottle @ Chriso’s Pre-GBBF Shindig ’13. Pours a dark brown black color with a small tan head. Has a roasted malty chocolate aroma. Roasted malty chocolate and caramel flavor with weak hints of licorice. Has a roasted malty chocolate finish.

ChrisO’s Pre GBBF ’Are You Scottish?’ tasting. Clear brown - amber beer. Little pale tan head. Palate is smooth and light, semi dry. Very modest carbonation. Sweetish dark malts, touch of caramel/dark toffee. Whisper of paper. Subtle dark fruits. Light dry finish. Drinks well below it’s abv but it’s also a bit thin.

Bottle (#3549, 2012 vintage - ripping this from Paul!) at Chriso’s Pre-GBBF Shindig ’13, 10/08/13. Very dark mahogony brown with a medium tan head. Nose is dark fruit, dark toffee, dark malts, light chocolate. Taste comprises earthy notes, light roast, chocolate, dark malt, leather, dirt. Medium bodied with bite, fine carbonation, dry finish. Adequate impy affair.
