Slow, extended ageing before bottling differentiates this style from simply being a strong stout or porter. It makes Ridgeway Imperial Russian Stout considerably more vinous and sharp than an export stout. There is just that little nod towards a lambic beer, with very roast and very bitter flavours. The bitterness mellows over time in the bottle so the style is not intended to be overtly hoppy.

Bottle (#3549, 2012 vintage) at Chriso’s Pre-GBBF Shindig 2013. It pours deep mahogany brown with a small white head. The nose is roasty, toast, caramel, dark fruit, raisin, sultana and plum. The taste is roasted malt, earth, toast, peppery, caramel, toffee, chocolate, wood, light alcohol and decent bitterness with a dry, roasty finish. Medium-full body and fine carbonation. Well-rounded. A solid Imperial stout.

Bottle @ DØE tasting. Pours dark brown with a small offwhite head. Aroma of malt, chocolate, coffee, dark fruits, light alcohol. Flavor is malts, coffee, dark choclate, licorice, berries, light boozy. Medium body, lively carbonation. 170713

Bottle @ DØE meeting. Clear very dark brown with a beige head. Aroma is sweet, roasted mal and liquorice. Flavor is quite sweet and rather bitter. Dry and roasted rather bitter finish. 170713

330ml Bottle - Black with a small tan head. Liquorice, coffee, plain chocolate and a hint of shoe polish in the aroma. Rich, roasted, malty and warming taste with notes of Bournville chocolate, liquorice, coffee and leather. One to sip slowly.

Bottle from Presporska pivoteka, Bratislava. Dark brown color with medium beige head. Aroma of chocolate, coffee, dark malts. Taste, roasted malt, coffee, chocolate, dark fruits. Light coffee bitterness in finish. Alcohol is dangerously hidden. Enjoyable beer.

Bottle shared by Cuso, thanks. Aroma sweet alcohol, roasted, very lightly burnt, milk chocolate. Light peat. Clear dark brown colour. Taste heavy chocolate (initially), roasted malt, very lightly burnt, some warming alcohol, dark fruits, plums. Almost no coffee, which I like. Full body, nice drinkability. It will probably benefit from aging.

Bottle @ Y.N.W.A Beershop. Pours dark ruby amber with a small white head. Chocolate, roast, caramel, fudge and fruit. Warming alcohol. Smooth and full bodied. Tasty and enjoyable.

From tap at Ølbaren. Pours clear and golden brown with a small, thick and creamy head. Roasted malty, coffee and caramelish. Lingering coffe and caramelish. Bottle version didnt have the same coffee notes.
