Pastry stout by one of the two most prominent and progressive Romanian craft breweries (the other being Hop Hooligans), thanks Craftmember for sharing. Thin, pale greyish beige, open, dissipating head, black robe with thin burgundy edges. Aroma of ground hazelnuts, nougat, milk chocolate, toffee, dates, pecan nut pie, vanilla, ‘Haagse hopjes’, Belgian chocolates, coffee liqueur, melting mocha ice cream, toast. Dense, sweet onset, raisins, dates and blackberry coulis, softly tingling carbonation, full and oily, almost somewhat syrupy mouthfeel; pecan-nutty, toffeeish and (milk-)chocolatey layers in the middle, sweet with a soft toasty-bitter edge, turning more roasty and coffee-like in the finish, aided by an undertone of leafy hops. The vanilla and added chocolate flavouring pushes up retronasally – the first also coming from the oak barrels – but not too overwhelmingly so; I do not, however, get a real ‘marshmallow’ feel (not that I need one anyway) and a beautifully orchestrated play of chocolate, toffee, gentle oaky tannins and coffee, highlighted by a warming glow of liqueurish alcohol (more than actual rye whisky), establishes a long, satisfying ending. Rich, complex, indulgent and ‘decadent’, but not to the point where it loses all connection with its stout pedigree – in fact the coffeeish roasty bitterness is very welcoming here and prevents the whole thing from becoming annoyingly and monotonously sweet. Very solid, full-bodied, cleverly structured pastry stout!
