Our Piper Down Scottish Ale hits all the right notes for the Ballast Point Bagpipe Corps that inspired it. We created this very low hopped, malty ale for the band to enjoy using UK Maris Otter malt, roasted barley, UK hops and low fermentation temperatures. Then we let the brew’s sweet complexity build over a three-hour boil. Full of roasted caramel flavor, it’s a pub classic with Ballast Point personality.

On tap at Beachwood BBQ. Pours with a huge, rocky tan head with a ruby brown body beneath. Aroma of smoke, chocolate, dark fruits, butterscotch and tobacco. Taste is creamy caramel, light butterscotch, tobacco, some esters, bitterness and burnt brown sugar. Syrupy mouthfeel and light bubbles.

Draft at the brewery. An amber beer with a thin white head. The aroma has notes of malt, caramel, and lemon. The flavor is sweet with notes of malt, caramel, citrus, and alcohol. A mixture of Scotland and San Diego.

On tap at Ballast Point during the RBSG Pub Crawl Tour on 08/01/2008. Clear copper amber body with a medium off-white head. Sweet nutty caramel aroma. Sweet caramel nutty flavor. Medium body with moderate carbonation.

Draft. Rich amber beer with a dark cream-colored head. Big caramel malt aroma. malt, caramel flavor with light citrus and earth. Medium bodied. Caramel lingers with a bit of citrus. I expected more of a stone fruit, but I got light citrus. Hmm...

From tap at the brewery. Pours clear and golden hazzlenut brown with a lacing white head. Dense caramel and breadish malt aroma. Flavour is breadish and light hops bitter with a light spiced note. Ends dry and breadish malty. Nice and easy.

Sample at the Linda Vista location. This brew is a clear brownish-amber color with a thin light beige head that diminishes slowly. Thin rings of lacing on the glass. The aroma has a bit of a smoked character, and notes of earthy malt and caramel. Medium, smooth body with toasted malt, caramel and dark fruit flavors. Bits of chocolate and hops as well. The finish is roasty and sweet with a toasted malt aftertaste. Pretty good overall.
