Our Piper Down Scottish Ale hits all the right notes for the Ballast Point Bagpipe Corps that inspired it. We created this very low hopped, malty ale for the band to enjoy using UK Maris Otter malt, roasted barley, UK hops and low fermentation temperatures. Then we let the brew’s sweet complexity build over a three-hour boil. Full of roasted caramel flavor, it’s a pub classic with Ballast Point personality.

Tap at Devil Craft Hama. Brown with orange tints, lace. Nose of caramel, fudge, umami. Sweet and malty, with dried fruits, raisin. Tasty, but not too much happening.

The Sampler, Brooklyn tap: Pours brown with a beige head. Aroma is caramel malt, barely any hops, some roast. Taste is rather light. Slightly sweet, but really not much at all. Body is pretty light. Very easy to drink. Not particularly memorable.

1190 yen bottle at Antenna America, 5.8% a very dark cherry cola red. Malty grainy aroma, a bitter but malty sweet taste with nutty notes. Not all that scotch ale like but nice.

Draft - Light grains and toasted malts. Cloudy amber with a caramel head. Caramel and grains. A very average and plain scotch ale.

A lightly hazed copper amber ale with a thin mocha head. In aroma, sweet fruity malt with dark fruits, alcohol, light butterscotch. In mouth, a nice fruity malt with dark fruits, plums, butterscotch candy, a bit of wood, decent.

Cloudy dark amber color with creamy head. The aroma is strangely fruity. Malt and caramel flavor, smooth and lean mouthfeel, with some acidity and fruitiness; ordinary bitterness.

Tap @ Hopping Pig, San Diego. Nice head with good duration. Color is dark amber. Aroma and taste are roast malt, dried fruits, caramel, nuts and hops.

Poured up on tap at the Chandler, AZ Whole Foods (who knew?) with ruby dark red body and tan head. The aroma has sweet malts, prune infused molasses and sweet Scotch Whiskey notes. The taste has smooth molasses mixed with prunes and then getting both raisin like and infused with Scotch Whiskey. It’s pretty darn smooth and maintains its flavor right into the finish.

Tap at BP. Pour is a dark amber/brown with a minimal head. Aromas of dusty grain and toffee wiith a little brown sugar. Flavor is fairly malty with lots of toffee and brown sugar, but comes across as a little thin. Finish is weak and sweet.
