One of Scotland’s favourites thanks to its distinctive and full-bodied flavour. Pale malt gives satisfying ‘Horlicks’ maltiness and black malt adds balance to the sweetness. Challenger provides the bitterness and base note herbal hop character with Goldings adding a hint of orange peel.

Bottle fromWaitrose in Glasgow. Nose is oranges, herbal hops, toasty malt, light caramel, grains. Also some yeasty esters. Rich malt flavor, toast, nuts, toasted malt, light caramel, not very sweet. Rather complex and very malt though not sweet. Well attenuated, finishing dry and hoppy. Spicy, bitter hops in the finish. Does it stand the test of time? Well, I think it is a good example of a Scottish bitter. I can't say how different this one is to those that MJ drank 25-30 years ago. Probably wouldn't be on many best 500 lists today, but still worth checking out.

500ml Bottle from Morrisons, Dunoon. Deep amber in colour, with a thin, off-white, head. Caramel, red berries and brown sugar, with a touch of leafy hop and moderately bitter finish. Reminded me of a stronger version of GK IPA. OK.
