Samuel Adam’s Boston Lager is approachable, complex, and smooth with the perfect balance of caramel malt sweetness and spicy hop bitterness. First brewed in 1984 in our founder Jim Koch’s kitchen at a time when there were under 100 breweries in the United States, Samuel Adams Boston Lager helped pave the way for the American craft beer revolution.
A smooth, German-style lager with slightly sweet roasted malts, notes of caramel, toffee, and a distinct noble hop character with subtle piney citrus. It ends with a crisp finish that makes you want another.
Admin Note: Samuel Adams remastered the recipe for Boston Lager in 2023. In summer of 2024, the remastered recipe remains, but the "Remastered" marketing is now absent from the packaging. This entry is for the remastered recipe marketed now as "Boston Lager".

Slightly spicy aroma. Taste is moderately bitter, with a spicy and floral hop flavor. Caramel sweetness and wood balances underneath. Seems to have more hop bitterness than the previous version.

Poured an amber color with a small white head. Aroma was light juicy hops, bitter orange peel, sweet, pleasant. A bit less malty than the older version. This is fine, probably more in tune with today's palate than what was, at the time a very hoppy lager.

12 Fl Oz bottle into glass. At Orleans Casino, Las Vegas. Copper coloured beer with a thin sticky white head. Very faint malt nose. Nice lacing, slight zing. Some smoky caramel notes. Not bad, quite interesting.

Multiple 2024 bottles from a 6-pack from Livonia Liquor. Pours a clear orange amber color with a finger of beige head that dissipates. Aromas of caramel, straw and herbal hops. Sweet caramel malt, mineral and spicy, peppery hops on the palate. Lingering toasted caramel notes with a floral, peppercorn-like hop finish.

0.355 l bottle from 'Craftbeershop.com', best before October 2024. A little hazy, deep amber with a thin, frothy, slowly diminishing, white head. Sweetish-malty, slightly resiny and a bit fruity aroma of tobacco, caramel, some pine and light grapefruit. Gently sweet, malty, moderately bitter, quite resiny and slightly fruity taste of caramel, tobacco, wet leaves, raisins, pine and some grapefruit, followed by a short, gently bitter finish. Medium body, quite effervescent mouthfeel, soft carbonation. Tasty American lager, nicely hoppy, rather old school, not as outspoken as Brooklyn Lager though.

A few bottles: pours amber with white head. Aroma is caramel and toffee. Hard to compare between the before version that I did not have in years. Still fine and does the trick.

Draft. Dark gold colored and small head. Not the amber coloration of original. Floral and caramel and some fruit. Light bodied. Thinner as well. Overall lighter and less flavorful than original

It’s fine. I don’t have an original Boston lager to compare to, but this one is maybe more caramel rich. Light bitterness. Easy drinking. It’s well made though doesn’t offer a lot that interests me.

Not as good as the original. Dark gold with a medium sized foamy head. Sweetish and a bit vegetal with faint caramel and floral hops. Medium finish and body.
