The Flavor That Made You Fall In Love with Craft Beer

Samuel Adam’s Boston Lager is approachable, complex, and smooth with the perfect balance of caramel malt sweetness and spicy hop bitterness. First brewed in 1984 in our founder Jim Koch’s kitchen at a time when there were under 100 breweries in the United States, Samuel Adams Boston Lager helped pave the way for the American craft beer revolution.

A smooth, German-style lager with slightly sweet roasted malts, notes of caramel, toffee, and a distinct noble hop character with subtle piney citrus. It ends with a crisp finish that makes you want another.

Admin Note: Samuel Adams remastered the recipe for Boston Lager in 2023. In summer of 2024, the remastered recipe remains, but the "Remastered" marketing is now absent from the packaging. This entry is for the remastered recipe marketed now as "Boston Lager".

Bottle at their Brewing the American Dream reception. Let's face, I haven't had the original Boston Lager for years. But I kind of see where they tried to update it for drinkers 40 years later. Drank from the bottle, so no appearance noted. Nose is more of a basic lager than an earthy brown malt. Taste is a little more malty than a pale lager, though. I pick up a little more hop that I'd figure a flagship beer to have. No resin bombs here, just an increased bitterness and a bit of fruit.

Caramel malt and grass aroma. Amber with small head and mild effervescense. Mildly sweet caramel malt, and mildly bitter grass flavor. Nice body.

Bottle picked up at Harmons. Pours clear amber with a small off-white head, light lacing. Toasted malts, caramel, grassy, zesty, pepper. I like this better than the original version. Less malty and crisper.

From a 12 oz bottle. Decent lager with some corn aromas and a light flavor.

12 ounce bottle from Ingles Black Mountain, 4/27/23. I really like the original but trying to stay open minded. Looks nice. Clear copper, large beige head, good retention. Aroma of grassy hop, earth, pale malt. Taste is toasted malt, grassy hops, citrus. Well balanced. Not bad, but definitely a shadow of its former self. Hopefully it fails miserably and they bring back Boston Lager Classic. Can't believe I'm the first rating of this on RateBeer. I know it's a newish beer, but, come on, it's a nationally known beer with a well publicized new recipe. Come on, RateBeer.
