Swanton Berry Farm is nestled in the Santa Cruz Mountains. Warmed by the summer sun during the day and cooled by humid marine breezes at night, Swanton’s fields grow some of the sweetest strawberries in California. We hoarded these magical berries and added them to our Dogpatch Sour ale before aging it in used wine barrels. This complex beer is our ode to the fertile coastal farmlands of California.

Bottle shared at the DC Pre-Thanksgiving tasting. Poured a hazy golden orange color with an off-white head. Aroma was notes of strawberry, light acidic notes. Light malts, fruit sweetness. Flavor had nice strawberry notes. Enjoyable.

The beer is an orangey amber color with a smallish off white head. Looks a bit fizzy and the head dissipates pretty quickly. It’s quite cloudy. The aroma has a very good strawberry flavor. It’s jammy and full with both sweetness and sourness to the fruit. Not a ton of depth behind that jammy berry flavor, but it’s a nice aroma, nonetheless. Taste has firm sourness, particularly as it warms. Under ripe berries with some sweet jam on top. Firm pucker. Tangy feel. Some acetic character. Seems a bit one note, particularly in the finish. Not much depth or funk. Some of the oak and vinous flavor comes through from the barrels, but it’s dominated by sour strawberry. That said, it’s a good job for a strawberry sour, which seems like a difficult task, at least based on others. I’m not finding any of the off flavors that have cropped up in some Almanac beers, but it might just be the fruit pushing everything else off the stage.

Bottle. A hazy, orange colored beer with a rim of light beige bubbles. The aroma is of the sourish kind, with berries, overripe strawberries mostly, something vinous and a funky touch. The flavor is rather tart, with lemony notes, strawberries and some caramel hints. Some funky, leathery hints. Medium body, tart and with a nice carbonation level. Lasting finish. Quite nice this one, although there’s a tad too much overripe strawberries in the aroma. 141025

375mL bottle, pours a hazy dark orange amber with a small beige head. Aroma brings out lots of fresh tart strawberries, citric acid, and other acidity. Flavour is along the same lines, with lots of citric acid, sour strawberries, and even some lactic notes. Quite acidic, tart and dry. Medium complexity and quite drinkable, but nothing extraordinary. Not really my type of thing.

Very dark golden brown nice clarity. 1 finger head fades fast. Nose is tart with honeydew melon and vine grapes. Very vinous taste. Nice tart enamel coating minor chalk and toothpaste mouthfeel. I would say much less strawberry than I was every expecting. Maybe a bit too malty. Muscadine finish sharp kiwi skin bitterness
