Reviewed from notes.
Bottle to nonic glass.
Appearance: dark red color with a finger's worth of white foamy head which slid off appropriately to leave some light lace.
Aroma: sprucy bitter to piney tones clipping a caramel/toffee malt backbone, slight molasses, subtle grassy hoppiness further underneath
Flavor: blends the prior noted aromas together leaning towards the bitter side at first but allows a semi-refreshing and sweet tone of the spruce to enter in; mild sprucy to malty finish
Texture: light to medium bodied, somewhat sessionable; some smoothness but also some sprucy needle-like bitterness
Overall: interesting take on an amber/red ale and I heard the original recipe was by Benjamin Franklin which is also pretty cool.
