Maiden 2017 celebrates five amazing years of brewing at Siren. The 2017 blend contains beer from Rum, Bourbon (including Heaven Hill & Jim Beam), Red Wine (French Oak), Tequila and Auchentoshan Single Malt barrels, along with about 15% made up of fresh Maiden. The aroma truly sings this year with red wine and berry notes prominent, before pillowy soft marshmallow on the palate gives way to spirit and spicy wood undertones. The blend rounds off with a long, rich finish.

Bottle from BrewDog Leicester. Brown and quite translucent. Almost flat. Amazing aroma. Tobacco, vanilla, agave, cane sugar, whisky, leather, chocolate malt, blackberry. Taste jars at first - I expected more sweetness - but then I warm to it. There's a spicy sweetness tethered to the bourbon sourness. Pepper, whisky and vanilla custard notes in the finish. Carbonation asserts itself in the body. This is incredible, and my top beer of 2018 so far no questions asked.

Almost clear deep amber beer, bubbly tan head. Smooth palate, mildly dry, reasonable fine carbonation. Soft malts, sweet. Trace.of caramel, whisper of treacle. Soft dry malt cream in the background. Rich red wine brings nice red and black berries. Touch of barrel wood. Little mellow brandy and a mild tequila tang. Finishes with a light spicy touch and a little strawberry liquer. Interesting and very drinkable. Best version for a few years.

Cask at Craft Clerko. It lives darkest brown, Mr black with a small bubbly white head. The aroma is rich, oily, wood, big bright vanilla character, dries fruits, rum, eccles cake, molasses, toasty action, liquorice and unami. The taste is is rich, slick, punchy, bitter, oily, liquorice, umami, peppery spice, but wood character, tangy fruits, fruit cake, vanilla, toasted chestnut, dark fruits, earth, tar, resinous, dried fruits, damp leaves, toothy, chewy malt, leather and molasses with a slick and warming finish. Full body, low carbonation and oily mouth - feel. Pretty intense stuff on cask, akin to fortified wine almost. A fun, yet challenging sipper.
