The name “Velvet Wallpaper” was inspired by a serendipitous moment when Matt Swihart, Double Mountain’s owner, walked into Van Henion’s brewery and discovered the same timeless, classy velvet wallpaper pattern found in the Hood River pub, albeit in a different color. This shared aesthetic connection underscores the timeless elegance both Double Mountain and Van Henion aim to capture in every sip of this beer.
Velvet Wallpaper West Coast IPA is a well crafted West Coast IPA using some of the brewers’ favorite Pacific Northwest hops. Modern hopping techniques highlight citrus aromas, with pine and evergreen providing a well-balanced complement. This IPA is dry, crisp, and bright to boot, with an ABV of 6.3% and 50 IBUs, making it an easy summer patio pounder.

500ml bottle from Newport Avenue Market. Foggy golden pour, silky white head. Malty aroma, light fruitiness, pear, apple. Taste is bready, malty, light fruity flavors, apple, light bitterness, and a touch of dryness.

On tap at Loyal Legion (as Velvet Wallpaper). Pours clear gold with white head. Aroma has clean dank pine and soft malts. Flavour has resin and pine up front, oily dankness underneath. Solid carbonation. Great dank and piney hop expression, oily mouthfeel does leave a slightly sludgy mouthfeel, but generally solid WC IPA.

On tap at Double Mountain Woodstock, pours a clear golden blonde with a small white head. Aroma has a strange fungal hop character, some earthiness, a touch of pine, and light sweatiness. Flavour is better, with more classic piney hops, some citrus, light resinous oils, and a touch of sweatiness. Reasonably good hop expression, but seems a bit suboptimal.
