Shared can at Ebenezers, Crewe – thanks Erika ! Pours a murky black with a small cream head and good lacing. There’s flowery malts and milk chocolate in the aroma. Chocolate again in the mouth along with cherries, malts and hints of coffee and spice. There’s a rich fruitiness in the finish – plus a little alcoholic strength. This is rather nice.

Opaque stout with a good, thick tan head. Smells of cherry and toasty malt. Flavour opens up with a big hit of toasty malt, there's some coffee in here, dark chocolate and the sweet cherry cutting through it a little. Smooth, nice body to it, good balance. Very nice.

Keg draught at the Two-Tailed Lion, Leicester. Mid-brown and slightly translucent a quickly dissipating reddish-khaki head. Some raspberry and liquorice notes among the delicate chocolate malts in the nose. Bittersweet taste, lots of chocolate, berry, stone fruit. Chalky bitterness in the finish. Oily body, carbonation low side of medium. Top stuff.

440ml Can. Pitch black appearance, small beige head atop. Good roasty introduction on the nose. Taste presents a solid roasty stout, medium bodied with some gentle caramel and bitter dark chocolate moments. Very good.

On cask at the Hanging Bat. Appearance - close to opaque black. Orange chinks. Neat lacing. Nose - smoke and liquorice. Big molasses and burnt caramel notes too. A hint of chocolate but really, this is a molasses style of stout. Taste - more molasses and smoke. Again, liquorice there too. Burnt spiced bread. Palate - medium bodied, dry and smoky through middle and finish. Overall - great beer.
