Every year we age a special batch of our much-loved Russian Imperial Stout in Bourbon barrels. The depth, intensity, and complexity of the flavor profile of this special release, like its predecessors, make it a worthy tribute to Old Rasputin. This year, two variants of barrel aged Old Rasputin were produced -- one in rye whiskey barrels, and the other in wheat whiskey barrels.

Stout Aged in Rye Whiskey Barrels. First release XVIII (2015).

Bottle shared at the vertical tasting starting with XII. Cacao nib, roasty coffee, s’mores, faint rye nose. Deep cacao, milk chocolate, smooth caramel chews, toasty with a peppery, rye finish. Liked this one a lot.

Pours dark, almost black with some beige remnants of foam. Aroma has some big whiskey going on, together with burnt bitter chocolate. Warming high ABV beer that is also high in chocolate, bitterness and whisky. Decadent and something I would have loved to sip longer and in larger volumes. Had it also in 2018, Freezing Midtown tasting. Dark brown with frothy beige brownish foam. Nice soft and creamy nose, whisky coming out, nice booze. Taste is balanced, coconut oak, vanilla and some good whisky character there. Super well blended, mellowed into a very balanced and coherent flavour. Barrel really well represented there. Awesome. Rating remained the same.

650 ml bottle. Black color with beige brown head. Malty aroma, light roasted, perfume - vanilla, whiskey, chocolate. Sweet and bitter taste, better than aroma, vanilla and chocolate notes. Full silky oily body with soft carbonation.

Pours black into a snifter. Mocha micro head with excellent retention recedes leaving trailing sheets. Sweet dark caramel and rye aromas. Crisp with sweet caramel and vanilla upfront turning to hot rye and dry oak in the lasting finish.

Corked bottle from Firefly, Vancouver, 11.3% ABV
The bottle opens with a loud pop. Black color, huge beige head. Very nice aroma, dark chocolate, a bit of roasted malts, a bit of spirit. Strong body, very good chocolate flavor, light residual sweetness.
Excellent beer, but I feel that the added booze doesn’t help.

Pre vacation decadence. Perhaps a tiny bit hot but over all another great Rasputin version. A treat...

Bottle bought @ Systembolaget. Pours blackish very dark brown with a big frothy and creamy mocha head that leaves lots of thick lacing on the glass while dissipating. Smell is malty and tiny spicy with roasted malts, dark bread, caramel, toffee, vanilla fudge, butterscotch, charred wood, dark roast coffee, dark chocolate, plums in brandy, toasted coconut, black pepper corns, moist soil and bourbon alcohol. Taste is sweet, bitter, malty and roasty. Mouthfeel is soft, velvety, round, slightly roasted astringent, slightly boozy and near full bodied. Finish is sweet and bitter with a hefty roasty malt base, coffee, chocolate and peppery the whiskey. Perhaps a tiny bit hot but over all another great Rasputin version. A treat...
