Every year we age a special batch of our much-loved Russian Imperial Stout in Bourbon barrels. The depth, intensity, and complexity of the flavor profile of this special release, like its predecessors, make it a worthy tribute to Old Rasputin. This year, two variants of barrel aged Old Rasputin were produced -- one in rye whiskey barrels, and the other in wheat whiskey barrels.

Bottle bought @ Systembolaget. Pours blackish very dark brown with a big frothy and creamy mocha head that leaves lots of thick lacing on the glass while dissipating. Smell is malty and tiny spicy with roasted malts, dark bread, caramel, toffee, vanilla fudge, butterscotch, charred wood, dark roast coffee, dark chocolate, plums in brandy, toasted coconut, black pepper corns, moist soil and bourbon alcohol. Taste is sweet, bitter, malty and roasty. Mouthfeel is soft, velvety, round, slightly roasted astringent, slightly boozy and near full bodied. Finish is sweet and bitter with a hefty roasty malt base, coffee, chocolate and peppery the whiskey. Perhaps a tiny bit hot but over all another great Rasputin version. A treat...

500ml bottle, vintage 2015. Pours an almost black with a tan head. Aroma is whickey barrels with vanilla notes. The beer is quite high corbonated. Taste is vanilla, roasted malt, quite smooth. Vanilla, roasted malt aftertaste. Almost excellent! Would be better with less carbonation.

At a tasting, thanks, smallish bubbly head, opaque black color, strong aroma of coffee and vanila with some dried fruits behind, strong whiskey and coconut flavor with some cocoa and chocolate, bitterness just a touch harsh but over all the beer is quite smooth, quite sweet but not over the top. Nice but the whiskey character is just a bit overbearing.

Bottle shared at a tasting at kerenmk’s place. XVIII bottle. Black with a big light brown head. Aroma of whiskey, vanilla, chocolate, roast, coconut. Sweet flavor with chocolate, whiskey, vanilla, coffee, roast, a bit of dark fruits, a bit of salty soy sauce, and a bitter finish with a light boozy note. Full-bodied, rounded. Great.

(500ml 2015 bottle from Systembolaget web order shared) Pours pitch black with a fairly large dense head of fine tan bubbles, fading slowly with lace. Nose has spicy rye grain and spirit, musty wood and barrel, cacao bean, more dry roast and and a little bit of vanilla in the background. Bit of spirit heat. Flavour has reasonably sweet caramel core, a bit of coffee and cacao beans, oak, spicy rye whiskey notes. All the way through it’s a bit drier than the wheat whiskey version, and it’s drier, woodier and spicier on the finish. Medium bodied, smooth and soft carb. I like this a little more than the wheat whiskey version, I think because the peppery rye character moves further from a classic bourbon-type note. Feels a touch drier too. Very nice!
