Every year we age a special batch of our much-loved Russian Imperial Stout in Bourbon barrels. The depth, intensity, and complexity of the flavor profile of this special release, like its predecessors, make it a worthy tribute to Old Rasputin. This year, two variants of barrel aged Old Rasputin were produced -- one in rye whiskey barrels, and the other in wheat whiskey barrels.

Stout Aged in Rye Whiskey Barrels. First release XVIII (2015).

Taste is light sweet and light bitter with notes of raw sugar, red berries, wood, booze and chocolate. Full bodied with low to medium carbonation. Great stuff.

Bottle on Christmas Day (side by side with normal Rasputin). Huge head, pitch black pour. Soapier foam than normal Rasputin, slightly browner too. Aroma is huge caramel/marshmallow, toasted malt, spice, chocolate, some hops. More rounded, more toffee, less herbal hops than the normal one. More booze too. The soft creamy carbonation belies a huge bitter boozy and spicy bite (rye?), with lots of toasted marshmallow, roasted malts, dark chocolate. Really nice. The booziness combines with the rye spice for a huge sharp bite. Delicious. Top 5 stouts? Definitely top 5 if not top 2 or 3 of barrel aged stouts I’ve had. Had again Christmas Day 2016. Sat in the fridge all year. As delicious as I remember. Spiciness of the rye is so much more interesting than standard bourbon barrel aging. Yum. Had again CNY 2020. XXI version. A bit less spicy than I recalled. Still fantastic though. Must try if you come across it.

Bottle. Whisky nose, chocolate, berries. Rich chocolatey flavor with a pronounced tart edge, berries, rye whiskey. Rather higher carbonation than expected, almost a bit fizzy. This was not all that impressive at first, and much less nice than the Wheat Whiskey BA version, but it opened up in a lovely way as it warmed. I would give it a few more months in the bottle, but still pretty great now.
