The base beer of this multigrain Belgian ale was missing something when it was 'finished' so we wanted to take it a step further. The fresh Woodford Reserve barrels arrived around the same time so this beer and those barrels seemed destined to meet up. So the ale was missing something: AND BOY DID IT FIND IT IN THOSE BARRELS! A beautiful golden colour and if gold would have a taste: this would definitely be it.

0.33 l bottle from 'Rudat', bottled in September 2017. Slightly hazy, golden amber with a thin, frothy, slowly diminishing, white head. Sweetish, slightly vinous, gently malty, moderately yeasty-spicy and a bit fruity aroma of Belgian candy, bourbon, wood, white grapes and a touch of apple pie. Quite sweet, malty, gently yeasty-spicy and a little fruity taste of Belgian candy, vanilla, some bourbon, a touch of banana, hints of apple pie and traces of wood, followed by a medium long, gently bitter, moderately yeasty-spicy, a little tartish-woody, slightly vinous and just a bit boozy finish. Medium body, minimally astringent and moderately effervescent mouthfeel, average carbonation. Pretty nice beer, quite complex even if maybe not very refined. Good shot at a style which is not overly common, even in NL or BE.

Bottle @ home. Murky yellow to orange colour with a small white head. Smells nasty, sweaty, sweet. Tastes sweet, applen pear, nasty. Wow this is horrible. Almost makes me puke. The combination of how heavy it is with the weird cloyingly sweet taste is horrible. Full body, soft carbo.

Bottle, 0.33l. Aroma of wheat, barrel, vanilla, dried fruit and whiskey. Cloudy brown amber color with thin totally diminishing off-white head, yeast residue and average sparkling appearance. Taste starts with moderate sweet grainy and toasted malt, following is woody, earthy and grassy, mouthfeel is slightly rounded yet spicy, while finish is mild bitter. Medium to full body, thick texture and lively carbonation in palate. Triplewise good, otherwise good as well...

Bottled 12-09-17. Still don't like tripels, and this clearly is one. Not as sickly clingy and1 sweet as others, though, and it goes really well with the wood and bourbon. Not bad at all, but still a tripel. ("It's not you, it's me.")

Oranjekleurig bier met weinig schuim. Smaak is vrij zoet met iets van frambozen en rozijnen, bijzonder voor een Tripel maar daarom zeker niet slecht.

Bottle at home. Crystal clear dark golden with off white head. Vanilla, apple sauce, alcohol, sweet malts, light spicy yeasty stuff, whisky, some champagne too with dry fruity notes, caramel. It’s quite strong and alcoholic, with a lasting bitter herbal finish. Quite sweet and bitter. Full bodied with spritzy carbonation again a little like champagne. Quite weird, a bit too alcoholic and bitter to my taste but also not bad. A whole bottle is a little much though.
