Imperial stout from this Virginian craft brewery, at BeerTemple in Amsterdam, shared by craftmember. Irregularly lacing, moussy, medium thick, pale greyish beige head, jet black robe with thin mahogany edge. Aroma of bitter black chocolate, a lot of beef stock cube, fried mushrooms, cold coffee grounds, walnuts, burnt toast, vegetable soup (!), pipe tobacco, minerals, fennel, fried black olives. Dried fruity onset, very restrained in sweetness but with a lot of meaty umami, smooth mouthfeel but overcarbonated for the style. Toasty and walnutty middle, lots of vaguely coffeeish roasted 'burnt' bitterness, with that strange soupy thing showing up again retronasally, even something distantly reminiscent of green raw vegetables; peppercorn-like hop bite in the end, lingering toasted nuttiness. Way too 'soupy' and vegetable-coloured for the style (and for some strange reason), lacking in body and lushness and overcarbonated - not a success I'm afraid, especially considering the greatness achieved by American style imperial stouts by so many other craft breweries these days.
