‘Moonstrips’ takes its name from Eduardo Paolozzi’s 1967 screenprint portfolio ‘Moonstrips Empire News’. The beer’s recipe was inspired by David Bowie’s ‘Starman’, so we were drawn to the evocatively spacy ‘Moonstrips’ name.

Moonstrips is our “hazy, cosmic jive”. Typical of a German-style Hefeweizen, the look is a hazy golden-orange and the nose is a decidedly wheaty-banana. But rising through the wheatiness is a complex, rich smokiness reminiscent of an Islay whisky.

The taste is crisp and creamy, as sweet banana notes are undercut by the subtle peated smokiness. A satisfying thirst quencher, it pairs well with seafood and antipasti.

Bottle. Hazy amber body with a thin head that quickly fades. Steady carbonation. No lacing. Aroma of chalky wheat, salted apricot and an unexpected botanical edge. Flavour of peach, yeast and minerals. Medium body with a smooth texture. Soft fizz. Subtle and easy drinking but ultimately forgettable.

Bottle from Cork & Cask. It pours light hazy golden with a triumphant foamy white head. The aroma is toasty grain, cereal, hay, smoked malt, some green banana, creaminess and clove rock. The taste is dry, bitter, smoked hay, toasty grain, cereal, wheat bread, some soapy citrus, green banana, melon and spice through the finish. Medium body and high, foamy carbonation. Actually the smoke works quite well. Decent stuff.

Bottled from Appellation Wines Comely Bank. Had this many times but somehow no rating?!?!??! Appearance - golden with a slight haze. Generous fluffy head. Nose - tangy banana, a whiff of smoked cheese. Taste - definitely dominated by the hefeweizen notes. Loads more creamy banana, light spice. The smoke lightly smoulders and gradually becomes more pronounced as you go down the glass. Palate - medium bodied and creamy, elegant, dry smoky finish. Overall - lovely stuff. Clever too!

Bottle from Appellation Wines, cheers Ash! Pours hazy golden with a thick white head. Aromas of banana, light lemon and faint smoke. Taste is more banana, faint spice, more smoke as it warms up. Not bad.
