Pale Chocolate and Caramalt in the mash give the dark amber colour. Dark Muscovado in the boil adds to the complexity of the malt bill. Brambling Cross in the whirlpool works with the darker malts to add hints of berry fruit with hints of chocolate.

Cask at Crewe Dog, Crewe. Pours “bitter brown” with a medium sized foamy cream head and excellent lacing. The aroma is basically malty but with hints of nuts and dried fruit too. In the mouth there is a little sweetness at first but very quickly this is cancelled out by creamy bitterness. Flavour has malts and traditional hops back up by caramel and generic fruit. Later it becomes quite spicy and this is emphasised in the finish. This is reasonable – perks up after a slow start.

Cask-conditioned at the V Shed (JDW), Bristol 1/3/2023. Deep brown in colour, with a lacy, off-white, head. Leafy hops, some red berry fruit, a touch of caramel and moderately bitter finish. Fine.
