Stone Sublimely Self-Righteous Black IPA Aged in Rye Whiskey Barrels & Bourbon Barrels
Stone Sublimely Self-Righteous Black IPA practically named itself. The perfect melding of dark malts with a downright indecent amount of hops forges a complex flavor profile of assertive dark roastiness and big, bright hop notes for a singularly sublime experience.
Small Batch Brewer Cecil Menasco thought it would be an ingenious experiment to age our dark and deeply hopped Stone Sublimely Self-Righteous Black IPA in rye whiskey barrels…and he was right. This time our small batch crew, never a self-satisfied bunch, added bourbon barrels. The result is transcendent: perfectly balanced dark chocolate, oak, dried fruit and citrus tones. As it warms, the spicy rye and sweet bourbon barrel notes complete this masterful transformation.

Dark brown to black colored, large beige frothy head, nice lacing. Aroma is of roasted malt, dark chocolate and some coffee, medium+ hoppy pine, some dried fruit, woody bourbon, some caramel, alcohol. Taste is medium+ sweet malt, caramel, roasted notes with dark chocolate, pine and fruity hops but not that powerful, dried fruit, medium bitterness, bourbon woody, some alcohol notes. Medium+ bodied, soft carbonation, oily to sticky.

A bottle shared among Marko, Kaiser and Ogi. Dark brown to black, small beige head. Fruity hops, dark fruits, blackberry, light herbs, light dark malts. Flavours are rich, fruity, slightly hoppy, dried fruits, syrup. Some alcohol, warming. Not too thick, moderately lasting finish. Dry. Not too hoppy.

Bottle, Fakin. Pitch black, tan head. Orangey hoppiness, chocolate, caramel, lovely barrel touches. Bitter orange hoppy taste, dry caramel, medium body, ending a bit dry, excellent! Bitter orange liqueur! Wow!

Bottle shared at Lucky Bamboo. Thanks Joe B. Pours a pitch black with a quickly dissipating head. Nose is full on oaky whisky, dark fruit, tart cherry and faint hops. Roasty molasses, whisky and oak on the palate. Some citrusy bitterness on the finish. Very complex and seems to be holding up well at almost 2 years old.

Bottle from Brewcraft at home. Third of these Stone barrel aged series - this one sounded interesting but I was dissuaded by ratings. Glad I tried it eventually though. Dark nearly opaque super dark brown pour with sudsy light tan head that sticks to the glass and persists in a 1mm float. Aroma is rich earthy hops - surprisingly fresh black IPA smell. Not much barrel aging present on aroma but some vanilla booziness. Taste is huge bitter black IPA bite - dark chocolate and roasted coffee with alcohol burn, some wood and vanilla. Rich but not heavy palate. Burn on the finish. Delicious. What you’d expect based on the description - do not be turned off by good not great reviews. If you like black IPAs this is definitely worth a try.

Pours a dark, brown-black, with massive, pillowy, lasting head. Aroma has some basement dankness, citrus, roasted grain, and booze. Flavor has citrus, roasted grain, wood, and bourbon/whiskey booze. Not sure that barrel-aging did this beer any favors, to be honest.
