Stone Sublimely Self-Righteous Black IPA Aged in Rye Whiskey Barrels & Bourbon Barrels
Stone Sublimely Self-Righteous Black IPA practically named itself. The perfect melding of dark malts with a downright indecent amount of hops forges a complex flavor profile of assertive dark roastiness and big, bright hop notes for a singularly sublime experience.
Small Batch Brewer Cecil Menasco thought it would be an ingenious experiment to age our dark and deeply hopped Stone Sublimely Self-Righteous Black IPA in rye whiskey barrels…and he was right. This time our small batch crew, never a self-satisfied bunch, added bourbon barrels. The result is transcendent: perfectly balanced dark chocolate, oak, dried fruit and citrus tones. As it warms, the spicy rye and sweet bourbon barrel notes complete this masterful transformation.

Black color. Malty beer, with chocolate flavor, strong body, touch of tobacco, leather, some roasted nuts, and hint of fire wood.

500mL bottle, pours black with a small beige head. Nose brings out toasted malt, followed by plenty of whiskey barrels. Flavour reveals subdued floral dry hopping, followed by lots of whiskey, and a touch of caramel. Confused, with the clash of hops and whiskey. Alright, but a bad idea.

A pour from the bottle on Black Christmas V. Pours a very dark brown with no head. Aroma is fruity-berry bourbon, nice. Similar taste, very fruity, chocolatey notes. This one is nice.

Tasting @ Koelschtrinker. Great deep malty floral beginning. Thick, roasted and floral. Deep woody in the back, round and dry. Moderate bitter, the whisky wood is round and fits in great. Long dry bitter roasted floral aftertaste with a great round vanilla whisky woody back. Great.

Sampled from 0.5 l bottle. Pitch black with a medium large, frothy, almost stable, beige head. Sweetish-malty, slightly roasty and slightly fruity aroma of dark chocolate, coffee, hazelnut and some pine with traces of tropical fruits. Quite sweet, malty, slightly bitter, resiny and slightly fruity taste of dark chocolate, licorice, coffee, pine and some tropical fruits, followed by a short, moderately bitter, slightly bitter, resiny finish. Medium body, slightly creamy and moderately effervescent mouthfeel, soft carbonation. Nice!

Bottle bought at Stone in San Diego in February 2017. Dark brown with a small tan head. Sweetish with roasted malt, oak, bourbon and some light fruit. Warming alcohol in the finish.

Vom Fass Stone Brewing Berlin 2017-09 getrunken. Hier gelingt es den Röstnoten von Mokka und Schokolade plus der tollen Faßlagerung die Hopfennoten fast zu überdecken. Eine schöne leichte Fruchtnote bleibt. Ein tolles Bier.
