A sceptre is something normally reserved for the likes of royalty, but we all carry a sceptre – something that makes us special. For this India Pale Lager we combine Pilsner, Vienna and Caramalts with a huge whack of hops to make what we call a Special Lager Beer.

25cl pours at Liquiderie is a watery but translucent brown, a nice lacey cap of beige head. Nose has some fruity, whoa, surprise. Then the malt hits, licorice too. Some Piney character. Flavor is better and more balanced, fruity and herbal, malt and cracker and some licorice. There's pine and citrus. This is more like the black IPA than I rated 2min ago. Dry, bitter finish.

Black beer, thick head. Smells lightly malty with some hops. Proper Hoppy kick in the flavour, a little lively. Some toasted malt and a little dark chocolate. Not the most exciting porter of this type but it's rich and has a good firm flavour.

Can at home in Hackney - picked up from Binch. Pours clear, deep brown with a creamy, beige head. Nice overall, lightly sweet, with lots of burnt toast, mellow roast, ash, earth, dry cocoa. Medium bodied with delicate, massaging carbonation and velvety texture. Bitter finish, lightly ashy, some bittersweet cocoa, scorched earth, burnt dark malts. Good stuff.
